Pediatric Growth&Development
8 Principles of Development: 1. G&D are orderly & sequential 2. Pace of g&d is specific for each child 3. Development= cephalocaudal and proximodistal a) infants gain head control before sitting & walking b) movements near midline (rolling over) occur 1st; then, eventually distal coordination of the hands (pincer grasp) 4. G&D become increasingly integrated. a) Simple skills & behaviors are integrated into more complex 5. Developmental abilities become increasingly organized & differentiated 6. G&D is affected by internal and external environment 7. Certain periods are critical (time when advances occur more readily) ie congenital anomalies occurring when fetus is exposed to certain viruses during fetal growth 8. G&D is a dynamic process Developmental Milestones
