SOM Assignment Unit 1

1. A square steel rod 20x20mm is experiencing an axial compressive load of 100kN. Calculate the shortening of the rod over a length of 50mm, given the modulus of elasticity is 2x105 N/mm2. 2. A steel bar has varying diameters along its length and is under an axial tensile load of 15kN. Determine the stress in each section and the total extension of the bar. 3. A steel rod is encased in a hollow copper tube, and the composite bar experiences an axial load of 45kN. Calculate the stress in each material and the load carried by each bar, given the dimensions and moduli of elasticity. 4.

TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT

YEAR:II YEAR MECH B UNIT I 1.A square rod 20mmX20mm in section is to carry an axial load(compressive) of 100KN.Calculate the shortening in length of 50mm.Take E=2X105 N/mm2. 2. Steel bar of 900mm long. Its two ends are 40mm and 30mm dia and the length of the rod is 200mm long. The middle portion of the bar is 15mm in diameter and 500mm long. If the bar is subjected to axial tensile load of 15KN, determine (1) stress in each section (2) Total extension. 3.A steel rod of 30mm diameter is enclosed centrally in a hollow copper tube of external dia 50mm and internal diameter 40mm.The composite bar is then subjected to an axial load of 45000N,if the length of each bar is equal to 150mm,determine (i)the stress in the rod and tube (ii) Load carried by each bar. Take E s=2X105 N/mm2and E c=1.1X105 N/mm2. 4. A steel rod of 50mm diameter ids subjected toa force as shown in figure.Find the elongation of the rod. Take E=2X105 N/mm2.
