Home Centers
Home Centers
In addition to basic (small) hardware items, the home center includes remodeling supplies for kitchens, bathrooms, paneling for basement renovation, and supplies for other large projects. Annual sales for this segment are in the ranges of $3 to $5 million per store, with an average transaction of $43. Home centers are located in larger shopping centers and commercial areas. In this category, the NRHA includes the new warehouse format store pioneered by Home Depot. D-I-Y Lumberyards The D-I-Y lumberyards are traditional lumberyards with lumber stored in sheds or unheated buildings. They are distinct from other lumberyards in that they also have a store that carries hardware and other home project related items. Locations are in commercial or industrial areas. The store space varies; 20,000 to 35,000 square feet would be representative. The average D-I-Y lumberyard sales are $4 million per year, with an average transaction size of $115. Industry Concentration Based upon data from 2000, the top home improvement chain, Home Depot, accounts for 24% of industry sales. The number two chain, Lowe's, accounts for 10% of industry sales. No other firm holds more than a 3% market share. The top twenty-five chains together account for 47% of industry sales. Table 2 summarizes statistics for the top 25 chains, across all categories (NRHA: Market Measure 2000 and Market Measure 2001):
