Database Administrator

Job Description

A database administrator is an integral part of an organisations I.T. infrastructure. Their


primary function is the conception, implementation, management, and development of a
database. It is a highly specialised position and carries a lot of responsibility. Modern
businesses and institutions have become ever more reliant on the quality of their data
management . The role of an administrator is essential to the efficiency of their organisation.
Your primary duties will be:-

• Installation, configuration and Upgrading of Database Software and other products


• Database Design and implementation
• Regularly upgrading and improving database experience for users
• Security and emergency recovery procedures
• Liaising with users to define their requirements
• Adherence to the Data Protection Act
• The front- end of the system (user experience), in addition to maximising (back-end)
data optimisation.
• User accessibility and privileges
• Uniformity and integrity of data across the database
• Scripting of database documentation, including data procedures and functions and data
directory (Metadata).
• Establishing Back-up and data recovery policies and procedures
• Training users
• Integrate back-end codes with other business applications

For a candidate to be successful in this role they require a multiplicity of skills in addition to
I.T. knowledge. The following characteristics are highly desirable.

Future Prospects

There is increasing demand for Database Administrators which is reflected re-numeration


packages with starting salaries of £21-25,000. With a pay projection of £30-35,000 after 2-
3years experience.

If you are career minded, there are plenty of opportunities to develop a rewarding career.
DBA’s have to possess both technical and management skills, allied to excellent
communication /negotiation skills. This allows for many vertical promotions and career options
I.E. project management, network management and systems development. Typical salaries
are in excess of £50,000 per annum.

If you are someone who enjoys working in a technically challenging and variable role, and who
likes to work as part of a team this could be the ideal job for you.
