How it all began... Triskelions Grand Fraternity The Humble Beginning: Those intervening years before the foundation We all met during our sophomore year in the university. Classmates in a few general curriculum courses as well as in some political science subjects, we were drawn together by our common interests in political theory and philosophy and the intense desire to make a mark in this vast academic community called UP. We would often spend hours, in various spots all over campus, but often on the lawn area outside the main library arguing and debating endlessly over theories of Machiavelli , Aristotle, Calvin, Aquinas or some forgotten philosopher. Mind you, we were not intellectuals, just a bunch of guys fascinated by what countries and people do that eventually shaped this world. We came from different backgrounds. Resty (Alfonso), Tito , and myself were Manila bred guys while Talek, Roy, and Romy (Fortes) came from Midsayap, Cotabato, Cardona, Rizal and Irosin, Sorsogon, respectively. All of us, I believe entered the university as entrance scholars- the first and the last time any of us earned that distinction. It was a strong bond of friendship that over time extended to something more concrete, acquiring a sense of purpose and mission that needed to be expressed. Our favourite place to hang-outafter class or even if there are classes is the 3rd Floor lobby, A.S. Building. The Political Science Club-the nucleus By our 3rd year, we became part of a bigger group of political science majors that included most of the Founders Batch and the future founders of Tau Gamma Sigma. It was an expanded social circle of friends and acquaintances, mostly classmates, who met quite regularly and frequently. Some of the senior members of the group were already part of the Political Science Club - one of the biggest (numbering more than a hundred members) and certainly one of the most influential student organization in Diliman during our time. We were invited to join the club and join we did. Political Science is considered the best preparatory course for law and the club was populated by members whose ultimate goal was to be a member of the bar. Naturally, it was ruled by members of the law fraternities, which at that time was composed of Sigma Rho, Alpha Phi Beta, and Scintilla Juris. There was a smattering of Upsilonians but majority of the fratmen and sorority women came from the aforementioned groups.
The Poli Sci Club was also a rich fishing ground for recruits. As such, we were approached either individually or as a group by all of them. It was a struggle not to yield to the promise of lifelong camaraderie and years of pleasant existence in the College of Law (and within the university itself) that was being offered by each. None of us were convinced, though tempted, to give in to the pressures. We refused to lose our identity nor give up what we started together. We knew what we wanted. We will build a new brotherhood - an organization founded on a new set of ideals, democratic in practice, liberal in thinking, distinct but not elitist in its perspective, rich in diversity, and most of all open and tolerant in its views. It was our turn to do the fishing inside this big pond called the Political Science Club. Showing the public its organizational discipline, collective determination and good examples, the fraternity got the attention and respect of the University of the Philippines student body. In the process, the enlightened group of Bro. Jun Rodriguez took the leap of faith to the Tau Gamma Phi in 1969 at Cavite the first site of the formal initiation rites. Under the leadership of FF Rodrigo Sta. Maria Confessor, the First Grand Triskelion (GT), the fraternity wielded influence and control which reached to the heights of dominance in the College of Arts and Science (CAS). The fraternity also founded its own political party named KAKASA. They were also members of the UP debating team and also members of the UP Oratorical Club. The early years of the organization saw the fraternity being engaged in the pursuit of political excellence in the U.P. campus and was able to elect, among others, the President of Arts and Sciences Student Council (the biggest council in the entire university) twice in a row. In less than two (2) years of existence, the fraternity seized and controlled the UP student Council. The founding years Establishing the frat was, for most of us, a work in progress. The first two years were the hardest. Designing the framework, defining the standards, and building the structure took a toll on everyone. Day after day we would meet to continue where we left off. Weekends were spent updating each other on the progress of individual assignments and consolidating inputs. Taleks dorm room and Romys apartment somewhere in Anonas were turned into work shops cum sleeping quarters. From among the group, it was Resty Alfonso who took on the task of working on the framework and standards that will ultimately define the organization. His keen mind and sharp intellect made him the most suited for this role. Who and what we are, as well as what we stand for, are, to my opinion the most critical questions that needed to be answered. Finding the answers was not easy. Ideas were flowing freely from everyone but concretizing them to form a solid whole, linking each one into a coherent, relevant , meaningful concept, while making sure that they collectively
represent our deepest aspirations, was the real challenge. While Resty was neck deep in research, Talek, Roy, Romy, Tito, and myself were working feverishly to attend to the details of organizing. The design of recruitment procedures, membership guidelines, initiation and indoctrination processes as well as rituals made our heads spin. The organizational structure from the head of the frat down to the lowest ranking officer had to conform to the overall scheme of things. The devil is in the details, so the saying goes, and for all of us it seemed like we would spend eternity figuring how to make sense of everything. After months of research and countless meetings, Resty finally presented to us his opus- The Tenets and the Code of Conduct. It was then, and still is now, a superbly written doctrine that defines with utter simplicity and yet profoundly deep in meaning and value what to us was the proper representation of true brotherhood. He also introduced to us the Triskelion - a figure that showed three running legs radiating and connected from a common center, which is symbolic of all the dynamic forces in physics and from an Asian standpoint, a symbol that represents the three aspects of dependent relationships which give existence to all functioning things. It was both a fitting symbol and portrayal of our philosophy-encompassing the entire spectrum of our beliefs and ideology. Soon after, it was adopted unanimously by all six of us as our seal and emblem. The Triskelion Hymn was arranged by Bro. Ben Beltran from UP Diliman. A rose by any other name. Triskelion was a result of a very long research, to come up with a name that truly be a mark of who we are amidst an ever changing world. We discovered the name and our symbol in the Antiquity and Classical Section of the U.P. Library. Thus, we came out with a definition that TRISKELION is the unity of the three dynamic forces of Fortis, Voluntas and Fraternitas. These forces were enable to control and conquer the universe. Unity being oneness, thus three in one. Adopting a name for the frat was the subject of much discussion. We initially took the position that we should use a non-Greek letter name as one way of signaling our departure from the system. From among the many suggestions given, we somehow leaned towards the name Fraternal Order of the UP Triskelions. However, during the last stage of our preparations, we realized that it was to our best interest that we take the Greek letter route as it was a more acceptable proposition from the perspective of recruitment. (Convinced of the success of a unified endeavor, the founding fathers proved to be real pillars of strength that was later manifested in the recognition of the fraternity within the academe as an order of the intellectual elite and in society as a powerful force to catalyze change.) Furthermore, we also wanted to avoid being perceived as a mere honor society or be ranked a notch lower than the established frats. As a compromise, we decided to favor the nameTriskelions Grand Fraternity and adopted the Greek letter initials . . .
Tau Gamma Phi. The founding batch By the latter part of the second semester, we were ready to begin active recruitment. We were able to secure pledges of willingness to join from a few close friends but we needed more recruits to reach the number required by the university for a student organization. Thus, we decided to begin selection from a short list of names, ranking the individuals on the basis of their commitment levels, strength of character, potential contribution to the frat and leadership skills. Allow me to name a few brods from the Founders Batch whose significant contributions paved the way towards the fulfillment of our ideals: 1. Rolando Rolly Bayan- strong in academics, highly analytical, we sought his counsel during critical times, a real devils advocate during important discussions, and an excellent political strategist/ ( Rolly graduated with Political Science degree as well as an LLB from the UP College of Law, became aranking legal officer in the Office of the President of the Philippines until his brutal murder in the late eighties in his residence along with his wife. The case remains unsolved up to this day.) 2. Gerardo Gerry Dacanay- highly principled, strong convictions, good leadership skills, an implementor ( Gerry eventually became the third GT, a philosopherwarrior, it was during his watch when the first major conflict with Kappa Epsilon occurred . (He graduated with a Political Science Degree, reportedly went abroad soon after. His present location is unknown to me.) 3. Cesar Cid Diomampo a born leader, highly organized, became Corps Commander of the UP ROTC (a position whose campus stature was equivalent to the UP Student Council President) assumed the GT position right after Gerry, credited for putting a more regimented approach to organizational discipline, it was during his administration when the frat mounted its first major political campaign in UP- the KAKASA party with Rene Guioguio as standard bearer for AS Council President, it was also the first time that we were recognized as a political force in Diliman ( he graduated with a Political Science degree, a successful businessman, Cid is still very active in frat affairs as Treasurer of the Alumni Association) 4. Alvin DeVeza- an active and reliable organizer, an all around guy and an excellent propagandist, often called Mr.Newsman- he is a one man information machine providing the frat the much needed intelligence data during the turbulent period (Alvin graduated with a Political Science degree, worked in Congress and taught in a Metro Manila school, he died a few years ago). And of course, one should not forget the others whose counsel we sought often during the formative years- Benjamin ( Benjie ) Tagayuna, a long time member of the Congressional Office, House of Representatives, and The Fajayan twins , a successful doctor and a lawyer. Jesus( "Jun") Rodriquez Jr, is the brother of B.I.R.
Deputy Commissioner Lucita "Babes" Rodriguez, one of the 10 Co-Founders of the U.P. Tau Gamma Sigma, Eduardo ("Ed) Conde, who became a accomplished banker and whose whereabouts remain unknown, stayed largely in- active during most of the period due to pressure of studies. With personal accounts by: FF Rod Confessor, FF Roy Ordinario, FF Talek Pablo and FF Tito Venida The Martial Law Era The Raid: Preceding the declaration of Martial Law on September 21, 1972 it was noted that advancing the cause of the studentry and spreading social awareness were unifying activities among fraternities and other cause-oriented groups. This is when nationalism and brotherhood were so intense that the efforts of the Triskelions were gradually made manifest and distinguished. ThroughProclamation No. 1081 by the late dictator President Ferdinand E. Marcos, the Fraternity being a staunch critic of the Marcos administration, together with other fraternities and organizations in UP, became the target of military harassments and illegal detentions. The oppressive Marcos regime, believing that these student organizations posed a threat to the status quo. Ostensibly due to "leftist" leanings, the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity's office inside the UP campus was raided under an Arrest-Search and Seizure Order signed by then Secretary of Defense and one of the "Architects of Martial Law", Juan Ponce Enrile which resulted in the confiscation of several allegedly "subversive" materials and documents. Fortunately, no one was in the office at the time of the raid. The lingering years of the Marcos government made a break among fraternities when the times again called the active involvement of the fraternity on various social protests and street parliamentarism. A new era dawned among the fratmen for during these times it is seen that rumbles diminished and socio-political endeavour made center-point in the schedule of activities. It gave the fraternity a chance to redeem its reputation as a force in catalyzing change in society. As the times called for a more radical response to the rampant corruption in government, injustice and the widening gap between the rich and the poor, the fraternitys leadership took it upon themselves to guide the brothers into a more active and deeper involvement in the mass movement for social change. The once feared warriors were now referred as front-line social activists. A new era dawned for the fraternity. Rumbles diminished and socio-political endeavours were made the focal points in the schedule of activities. It is with great pride that we note the role of the fraternity played in strengthening the youth-student sector of the 70s and 80s in preparation for the tasks that it was to perform in ousting the Marcos Dictatorship. However, the price that the fraternity paid for its unwavering nationalist stance was also steep. A lot of our brothers were incarcerated and tortured or summarily executed by the military protectors of the regime. Others took to the hills and embraced the armed struggle. Many perished in the process.
The first of whom was Bro. Nestor Ranchez MDG-NU 74. Amidst it all, we remained steadfast. The 70s and The Early Chapters Test of Physical Strength During these said years that the movement and healthy activities between and among the fraternity members were restricted. With their active minds and young bodies made idle, a new trend of competition emerged the physical rivalry and dominance. This resulted to the infamous university rumbles. The rapid growth of the fraternity was taken as a threat by the older fraternities. We were besieged from all sides by intrigues and unjust criticisms. Our brothers have no recourse but to rise and defend the name and honor of the fraternity. Victory after victory consolidated the name TAU GAMMA PHI as the major force in the fraternity system. No fraternity or regional aggrupation (varsitarian) could dislodge us from the new reputation we have earned THE WARRIORS. Our first rumble was with the Beta Rho Omega fraternity. They wanted us out of the 3rd Floor lobby. The rumbles then were hand to hand combat, no weapons were used. The conflict was resolved when we booted them out the campus. We suffered zero casualty. Then we had to defend against the Tau Rho Xi, Scintilla Juris and Kappa Epsilon in succession for a period of one semester, resulting in heavy academic casualties on our side. After martial law was declared, we were engaged in a 4-year violent struggle against the U.P. Sigma Rho Fraternity, which boasted of Juan Ponce Enrile as a staunch member-supporter and who was then the Secretary of Defense. The struggle eventually ended and we were victorious! Inevitably and ostensibly due to leftist leanings, the fraternity's office was raided under an ArrestSearch and Seizure order signed by Mr. Enrile, fortunately, no one was at the office that time. Thereafter we had a short-lived struggle against the Beta Sigma Fraternity sometime in 1975. 1976 saw the tragic beginning of a bloody and protracted struggle against which admittedly should not have been our enemy but was actually, our strong ally at the Adamson University when we first started a chapter in that area, namely the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. It was the opinion by the then SecretaryGeneral at that time, the late Allen Hernandez, that the rumble against the APO fraternity should not have happened. So much so that when we suffered our first fatality, Bro. Hernando Guevarra of Adamson University who was killed in an ambush en-route to an S.O.S. mission and died of multiple stab wounds while attempting to break a cordon set up by the APO fraternity at Mapua in Intramuros, he specifically ordered no physical retaliation to be launched against the APO fraternity. The rumble erupted anew a few weeks later in the University of the Philippines when a certain member, now deceased, of the APO fraternity, the son of the then
U.P. president, had a motorcycle accident near the campus, allegedly due to his own fault. For one reason or another, he blamed the U.P. TAU GAMMA PHI as the culprits and immediately on that same day, they launched an offensive against the U.P. Brods, caught them offguard, mauling a former GT and a Grand Council office. The next day, a 25-strong Tarantula of the U.P. chapter led by no less than Secretary-General Allen Hernandez clashed against a strong 100-men attack-force of the APO fraternity along the corridors of U.P. and in the ensuing melee, one of the frontliners of the APO fraternity, a certain Abad, suffered a mortal stab wound. Coming from a prominent family during the Marcos Era, his death was chronicled almost daily in the major newspapers of the Philippines resulting in a very negative, albeit nationwide publicity of the so-called notoriety of the TAU GAMMA PHI. From 1976, the fraternity became engaged in continuing, vicious and bloody rumbles against the APO fraternity. A Decade of Awakening: In the next few years many other chapters would follow suit. Reaping the fruits of labor, discipline and confidence in the Diliman community, the Triskelion principles reverberated outside of the U.P.-Diliman which signaled the advancement of the fraternity found a new home in the Philippine Maritime Institute (P.M.I.) on August 3, 1969. A few months later another group of student at the FEATI University embraced the Tenets and principles of the Triskelion on March 5, 1970. Following the success at the P.M.I. and FEATI University, the fraternity explored at the Mapua Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) on Apri11970, and later on was revive on December 2, 1973. Following these development, a succession of the chapter foundation came the National University (N.U.) and readily found acceptance on October 23, 1970.Trying to find a Christian home the Tau Gamma Phi was founded in the two biggest Catholic universities in the nation, the University of Santo Tomas (U.S.T.) on March 1, 1971, and at the Adamson University (Ad.U.) on July 8, 1973, and in that same year National College of Business and Arts (N.C.B.A.) - Manila on October 1973. With the establishment of numerous chapters in such a short span of time, a need to address problems endemic to a dynamic and fast growing organization became evident. Therefore, in 1973, the Metro Manila Regional Council (MMRC) was established in the First Regional Convention held in Narvaez Farms. It was tasked to coordinate the movements of the various chapters, harness their resources and collectively decide on matters vital to the fraternity. Bro. Florentino Jun Flor Jr. (MDG-UP 69), was elected as the first Secretary General of the MMRC. He will go on to serve a second and third term of office. The year 1974 saw the series of foundations and gave birth to the chapters at the University of the East (U.E.) Manila on January 21, at the Manuel L. Quezon University (M.L.Q.U.) on October 8 and at the San Sebastian College (S.S.C.) on November 19. These schools, colleges and universities will ultimately complete the phenomenal growth of the Fraternity in the early 1970s, but it didn't stop there. The meteoric rise of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity in that decade have only just began.
After the 3rd Regional Convention in 1975 at Narvaez Farm in Laguna, another school embraced the Tenets and the Codes of Conduct of the Fraternity. The Far Eastern University (F.E.U.) was founded on July 27, 1975, the 13th and only chapter found in that year. Then the next year, 1976, six succeeding chapters have been founded one after the other. They are the Philippine College of Arts and Trades (P.C.A.T.), now the Technological University of the Philippines (T.U.P.) on February 22, 1976, the University of Manila (U.M.) on March 7, 1976, the Central Colleges of the Philippines (C.C.P.) on July 11, 1976, the Philippine College of Criminology (P.C.C.R.) on August 7, 1976, the Lyceum of the Philippines on August 15, 1976, the Gregorio Araneta University Foundation (G.A.U.F.), now the De La Salle Araneta University on October 15, 1976, making 1976 the most productive year for the Fraternity. Then a few more chapters had been added in the later part of the 1970s. The De Ocampo Memorial College (D.O.M.C.) on August 30, 1977, the Eulogio "Amang" Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (E.A.R.I.S.T.) on March 19, 1978, the Philippine Air Transport and Training Services (P.A.T.T.S.), now called PATTS College of Aeronautics on September 5, 1978, and to close the decade with a bang, the Philippine Merchant Marine School (P.M.M.S.) - Manila on March 2, 1979, and the Perpetual Help College of Rizal (P.H.C.R.) - Las Pias, now University of Perpetual Help System on August 9, 1979, and two more chapters were recognized at Southern Tagalog Region, the Lyceum of the Philippines University - Batangas (L.P.U.), formerly known asLyceum of Batangas on September 21, 1979 and a few months later Western Philippines Colleges (W.P.C.) now University of Batangas (U.B.) of the said year were established. The 1970s is the most challenging but also the most fruitful decade for the Tau Gamma Phi, being a young Fraternity. It also saw the historic birh of the first High School Fraternity in the Philippines, the "Junior Triskelions" in April 4, 1975 at San Beda College. This decade also witnessed the first ever community fraternity and sorority based chapter outside of a school campus in the world, the "Triskelion Youth Movement" in 1977 in Tejeron, Paco Manila. This trend of chapter foundations goes on through the 1980s and 1990s, and until now, in the new millennium, new chapters in schools, colleges, universities and even communities in some far flung corners of the Philippines were being established. As the Fraternity was expanding, our elder brothers eventually graduated and went on pursuing their careers. To harness the resources, the Triskelion Alumni Organization was established in 1979. In truth and in fact, the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity is already the biggest and most cohesive fraternity and sorority in the Philippines. It boasts of membership numbering to about eight hundred thousand including community chapters known as the Triskelion Youth Movement (TYM). It maintains numerous college and university chapters around the country.Professional Triskelions are actively involved in their respective fields of interests such as theTriskelion Order of Law (TOL) for Law Students and Lawyers, the Triskelion Order of Medicine (TOM) for Medical students and Doctors, the Triskelion Orer of Nursing (TON) for Nursing students and Resident nurses, the Triskelion Order of Dentistry (TOD) for Dentistry
students as well as dentists, the Triskelion Order of Business (TOB) for corporate leaders, businessmen and entrepreneurs, and the Triskelion Law Enforcement Group (TriLEG) for Philippine National Police and Philippine Military, Marines, Navy and Air Force, the Triskelion Information Technology Organization (TITO) for the Information Technology professionals, the Triskelion Seafarers League ( TriSEAL) for those who are working as seamen, navy personnel, and crew in ships that are plying oceans around the globe, the Triskelion Rescue and Emergency Assistance Team (TREAT) for those who are members of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and various Fire Volunteer Brigades and theTriskelions of Call Centers (TOCC) for those who are working as call center agents. Additionally, we also have active alumni members of the Triskelion Alumni Organizations (TAO) from various regions all throughout the United States and other countries, with a unified purpose in focusing on a common goal of becoming productive economic contributors in countries they now reside including also countries in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Through the years, the au Gamma Phi has never strayed from its goals, and although the cause of which it has chosen to champion has proven to be difficult and sometimes, seemingly hopeless, the Fraternity has, nevertheless survived and even increased a thousand-fold in strength and in number, knowing fully well that peace is a product of strength and not of weakness, where other fraternities with the same noble intentions failed to succumbed into non-existence by adopting a passive resistance to fraternity violence; the au Gamma Phi has chosen not to follow the same path lest it suffers the same fate. As a manifestation of its sincerity towards the achievement of such goal, the Fraternity has taken an active role in organizing interfraternity alliances in the various schools and universities all over the country in the hope that such alliances will provide the conducive atmosphere where fraternities can slowly grow and mature together in a fellowship of mutual trust and respect in each others philosophies and ideals. Subjection Mark and Handshake By Michael D. Molino UST First, our fraternity has no tradition of SUBJECTION when it was founded. But this became an accidental grace that gave a profound meaning to being a Triskelion. The circumstance arose from an accident during a candle ceremonies initiation stage in UST in which a candle fell on Alexis Mario Hidalgo and burnt the lower front side of his body. Then all the Masters decided to subject all the succeeding Alexis as part of their final rites. I rationalized it and looked for the right place to locate the subjecton and found it in the middle, close to our heart. Second, I rationalize the subjection from the invisible lines that connect our Nipples to our Navel (pusod) to the head which resemble the religious symbol of ancient Egypt which was called ANHK.
Third, it symbolizes an invisible amulet or pendant if one is using a chain necklace or even in the absence of such necklace. Lastly, all the Alexis who became Triskelions were subjected while reciting to themselves and declaring the offering of their mind, love and body to our beloved fraternity. The HANDSHAKE was caused by my inner yearning to bind the brothers physically, and this led to my own research based on the handshake of other organizations. By observing their handshake, I noticed that the execution was mostly horizontal. By grace and shining moment, I concluded that the handshake must be vertical pointing upwards in recognition of a Supreme Creator. It should jibe with the Force of Trinity (Triune) and the Pyramid when two (2) people execute the handshake. The handshake shall have a meaning when the hands are clasps together, which shall be revealed during rituals. The Triskelion Colors By Bro. Ray R. Ramirez, MDG, U.P. 1972 Over the years, certain matters come into light, some seen in a different light. Such is our Fraternity's history and other facts and allegories closely related. When I joined the frat in 1972, the seal we had to "kiss" was actually done in primary colors: red, yellow and blue. Even the decals and silk-screened t-shirt logos were done in 3 colors. I could only assume the 3 primary colors equated with the 3 dynamic forces of "Fortis, Voluntas and Fraternitas". In the '1990's, these dynamic forces were even likened to the Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit); go figure. If I am not mistaken, my "ka-batch", Roland "Adi" Adriano, who later transferred to NU and worked for KBS involved in TV productions, made possible the procurement of reflectorized decals. Either his father, or another close relative, worked for 3M Philippines and that we were given a handsome discount for a minimum order of 500 pieces but only in 2 colors since 3 would bump up the price, considering the cost of offset printing in those days (1973 BC, "before computers"). So a decision was made to use black and gold since the contrast made the 3 legged symbol glow when light, esp headlights, reflected upon it. For P2.00 each, half a day's allowance for a typical college kid in those days, the brods snatched them up like crazy, sticking them on wallets, briefcases, "Cattleya" notebook covers and car bodies, windshields and other windows. I still have one surviving decal, affixed to my leather checkbook cover since 1979, still intact to this day. How are we to know that from such trivial beginnings, noble principles could be derived? It is a classic version of "function following form" and
"the means justifying the ends". Pure symbolism, yet true to principle. And it takes real Triskelions to find the true meaning of our norms and ideals and live our lives according to them. Triskelions Grand Sorority Birth of the Lady Triskelions: The formation of the organization was born out of necessity, because during those times the "Triskelion Grand Fraternity" or more infamously known in UP as the Tau Gamma Phi, was not even a year old and just in its infant stage of existence in the campus, and their main focus is on recruiting male students and setting a foothold in the university, so they are not yet kin to the idea of having a co-ed society, but since a lot of female students are friends and hanging around, supporting and attending social functions and gatherings with the Triskelion brothers that they quickly learned that having female members can be beneficial to the Fraternity especially in the recruitment of male members. So they decided to gather all their female friends and classmates to form an all female organization that will be their partner in pushing for their school and community service programs of pursuing their goal of educational excellence. It was a cold Friday afternoon of January 17, 1969 in Mandaluyong City when the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority was formed. Eleven (11) illustrious co-ed girls from the University of the Philippines, Diliman campus are "barkadas" or buddies of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity Founders who came together and valiantly embraced the TENETS and CODES of CONDUCT of the Fraternity. These women were all political science students and members of the Political Science Club that the Founding Fathers of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Founding Batch were also distinguished members. The Eleven Founding Foundress are Rosmari Carandang, Victoria Sisante Bataclan, Lucita Rodriguez, Erlinda G. Arabejo, Teresita Aguinaldo, Mila Garcia, Rowena Celino Alfonso, Atty. Emily Sibulo Hayudini, Nitz Santos, Flery Tesado Tesoro and Luzviminda G. Tancangco. The first batch that has initiation rites were held in Bustos, Bulacan. Successive batches came in until they reached the impressive number of almost fifty members from different course of studies in the UP campus. Since their counterpart fraternity, the Tau Gamma Phi, is a Greek lettered organization, the Sorority was also formed by adapting the letters Tau ( ), Gamma ( ) and Sigma ( ) from the Greek alphabet, which stands for Triskelion Grand Sorority, officially proclaiming them the sister organization of the Triskelion Grand Fraternity, the Tau Gamma Phi, and henceforth shall be called and known as "The Lady Triskelions", and the rest is history. Most of the founding members of U.P. Tau Gamma Sigma also belonged to the U.P.
Political Science Club along with the Founding Fathers and Founders Batch of the Tau Gamma Phi. The Lady Triskelions were born with notable members such as the Honorable Associate Justice of the Philippine Court of Appeals, Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang, the Ambassadress of the Philippines to Switzerland and Norway, Ambassador Victoria Bataclan, the first woman Commissioner of the Commission on Elections, Cmsr. Luzviminda "Luz" Tancangco, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (Philippines) Deputy Commissioner, Cmsr. Lucita "Babes" Rodriguez and Atty. Emily Sibulo Hayudini as its founders. Formal structure followed in July 1970 when they had their 1st Induction Ball. Despite of the girls' very stiff class schedules as well as busy bodies in the campus, the Tau Gamma Sigma members managed to formulate policies and guidelines of the Sorority particularly the Constitution and Initiation Procedure. Eighty percent (80%) is mental torture while only minimal percent were on the physical contact. Presently, the original eleven UP Tau Gamma Sigma founding sisters are now happy with their family and have excelled in their own chosen fields of endeavor. Some are now based abroad, few have their own businesses and others are holding top positions in the Philippine government. They are as follows: Rosmari "Rory" D. Carandang, Victoria "Vicky" Sisante - Bataclan, Lucita "Babes" G. Rodriguez, Teresita Aguinaldo, Mila Garcia, Rowena "Weng" Celino - Alfonso, Erlinda G. Arabejo, Atty. Emily Sibulo Hayudini, Nitz Santos, Flery T. Tesoro and Luzviminda G. Tancangco. Sigma or Saudara? A Temporary Hiatus: It is indeed in great pride that the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority members are very active in participating in school activities, especially in the Student Council. The sorority was an ultra ego image of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity which forces become stronger in the UP campus due to their individual excellence and gaining control of the College of Arts and Science (C.A.S.) student body, which at that time was the dominant college within the University with regards to the logic of numbers. But a few years later, in 1972, the number of the Tau Gamma Sigma members had gone down due to many had graduated and recruitment process then, has become too rigid due to the sudden declaration of Martial Law in the country. Sadly many things had changed, some were transferred to other schools; went abroad and some had to take on leave of absence or dropping out for various reasons or another. By early 1973, the sorority had faded in the campus and the remaining Sigma residents had already lose their interest to become active and their relationship with the UP Tau Gamma Phi had gone cold. But the Tau Gamma Phi brothers did not stop in looking for other recourse due to the fact that they cannot live without the Sigma, they need someone always at their side; "taga-luto, taga-payo, taga-awat,
taga-gamot, taga-alaga" and all the rest of being a "taga".And by 1974, when the late Triskelion Allen Hernandez assume the high post of G.T. (Grand Triskelion), he formed an all female society called "UP Sedarum Saudara", to fill in this void that the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority had left behind. The U.P. Sedarum Saudara (UPSS) A New Sisterhood: From 1973 to 1974 the camaraderie between the brother and sister Triskelions changed from warm to almost cold. Cordial relations were maintained all throughout the administrations of Grand Triskelion Florencio "Florence" Atanacio and Grand Lady Triskelion Suzette Badon (1973-1974). When the late Triskelion Valentino "Allen" Hernandez assumed the GT post in 1974, it was evident that the rest of the Triskelion brotherhood wanted to start fresh and organize a new breed of U.P. coeds. Friends, relatives, classmates and acquaintances were invited to an acquaintance ball at the Blue Ridge mansion of Triskelion Benjamin "Benjie" Rodriguez ('71) in October, 1974. The plans for the new organization were introduced to the lady guests and around 21 or so agreed to attend a planned weekend Leadership Seminar and Retreat at another location in Fairview, Quezon City. In November 1974, the original Founders Batch of the new ladies auxiliary sorority was formed. Their first task was to research and decide upon a name by which they shall be called, draft and ratify a constitution and elect officers among themselves. They also have to conceptualize and finish a group project within one year of their being members. To be unique among the countless women-based societies in the U.P. campus, the new sisterhood has to have a unique name based on the Filipinos' Malay heritage. And that is how the name "Sedarum Saudara" was chosen by the group. Derived from Indonesian, in English meaning "Altogether, Friends" or "Altogether Brothers and Sisters". Each female member was called by the title "Saudari" (the male counterpart is coincidentally "Saudara"). The first leader of the group was Jennifer "Jenny" Dumo Alvarez as the "Supreme Saudari" with Juliana "Julie" Torres as the "Prime Saudari". Other Saudaris were elected to the positions of Secretary, Treasurer and other vital duties. Sedarum Saudara quickly became one of the most popular among sororities in UP. Composed of the "beauty and brains" of the UP Diliman campus' female students during those times. Some of which will go on and become the future shakers and movers of Philippine society, such as the incumbent Mayor of Marikina City, Honorable Maria Lourdes Carlos-Fernando or simply known by her constituents as Mayor Marides Fernando, and the "Ranillo Sisters", the pretty Lilibeth Ranillo and film and television actress, director and produc erSuzette Ranillo aka Nadia Veloso, siblings of Philippine movie actors Mat Ranillo III and Triskelion Dandin Ranillo.
The first project for the group was to raise funds for the residents of Brgy. Tatalon in Quezon City. Then in 1975, the U.P. Sedarum Saudara (UPSS) produced and launched "Hala, Bira!", a concert which featured Asian Funk artist Andre Wilson and his band "Transit", singer Joy Salinas and a dance troupe performing at the "Ati-Atihan Festival". The show was a success. The Saudaris continued to recruit until most members graduated and then sometime in December, 1981, Saudari Chloe Ceniza was the only UPSS member to accept the invitation by the U.P. Tau Gamma Phi to join the revival of the U.P. Tau Gamma Sigma, Chartered Batch and so Saudari Ceniza, likewise, became a Lady Triskelion. The alumni Saudaris recently had a mini reunion last April in Manila with the first and second Supreme Saudaris in attendance (Jenny Alvarez-Bernardo and Julie Torres-Salazar), together with Marikina City Mayor Hon. Ma. Lourdes CarlosFernando. Third Supreme Saudari Annalisa Charisse Franco Gonzalez-Tootel was already home in Australia at the time of the meeting. Those present agreed to organize a grand Saudari Reunion in January or February , 2009 to be hosted by Mayor Marides Fernando in Marikina. One at a time, members from all batches are being located and contacted. This is indeed an event to behold almost 35 years after the founding of a unique and dynamic organization. Back From Hibernation: Years have passed but the Tau Gamma Sigma was never a familiar fixture in the UP Diliman campus scene. Although during these 8 year gap, from 1974 to 1981, the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority have been thriving and doing well in other chapters and school campuses inMetro Manila. Only in UP that they are totally erased from the consciousness of the student and faculty population and most of all from the Fraternity that spawned them, the Tau Gamma Phi. Probably because the Triskelion brothers have another apple of the eyes that pre-occupied them during the absence of the Sigmas, and these are the UP Sedarum Saudara sisters. It was only in 1981, after 8 years of hibernation, when the UP Tau Gamma Phi decided to revive the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority in UP. Due also to the disbandment and slow death of the UP Sedarum Saudara, until almost all members have graduated. And like before, the UP Tau Gamma Phi cannot Years have passed but the Tau Gamma Sigma was never a familiar fixture in the UP Diliman live without a female counterpart, so again they formed an all female society, but instead of forming another organization without an initiation rites like the UPSS, they in turn revived the UP Tau Gamma Sigma. Recruitments went under way and invitations were also extended to the remaining members of the Sedarum Saudara sisters to join and cross over to the Sorority, but only one accepted. So in December 1981 the revival batch of the Tau Gamma Sigma
Sorority were initiated. They are Dinky Ruivivar, Grace Corachea, Macris Santos and UPSS Saudari Chloe Ceniza. In the revival batch of 1981, only one Tau Gamma Sigma member came from the UP Sedarum Saudara. Triskelion Youth Movement Another first in the history of a sorority in the Philippines. True to its objective of changing the elitist orientation of the sorority system, the Tau Gamma Sigma, decided to open its doors to aspiring youth in the community through the Triskelion Youth Movement (T.Y.M.), so that they too, who temporarily stopped pursuing higher education to continue their chosen vocation, may also share in the glory of the Tau Gamma Sigma. Again conceptualized and conceived by the Fraternity's Metro Manila Regional Council through the enigmatic leadership of then Secretary-General Triskelion Monching Ocampo. Like the Junior Lady Triskelions, the Triskelion Youth Movement was also born out of necessity, they have the same motive when first conceptualized which is to regenerate the dwindling member population, but they have different reasons for coming into being. Unlike the Junior Lady Triskelion, which has been founded solely for the continued Fraternity's existence on campuses, the T.Y.M. is hatched to provide the Sorority's much needed muscle and strength for its own survival. As Lady Triskelions, they also persevered to preserve the Sorority's existence during its trying times. Numerous notable alumni of the Tau Gamma Sigma actually started their Sororital Journey as Lady Triskelions in the T.Y.M. It just shows how the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority is constantly evolving to the situation of the times in order to suit the needs and survival of the Triskelion existence for supremacy. The Junior Triskelions A milestone in fraternity and sorority history: Struggling from the effects of Martial Law which suspended all fraternal and organizational activity within the collegiate levels and the arrests of all militant students, the Fraternity decided to stay low to avoid being tagged as a subversive group working for the Communists out to destabilize the government, although a lot of its members went underground and took up arms to join the New People's Army, the armed paramilitary group of the Communist Party of the Philippines, in the mountains and jungles. These developments temporarily freezed the recruitment of new members, and without fresh bloods to replace the old ones, these resulted in the dwindling down of membership population, due to graduating members or just simply dropping out of school. The Fraternity's Metro Manila Regional Council at that time, led by SecretaryGeneral Atty. Ramoncito "Monching" Ocampo MDG (UP), took the trial initiative
to explore the idea to tap the younger generations. They decided to recruit in the High School sector. This gave birth to the "Junior Tau Gamma Phi" or better known as the "Junior Triskelions", founded at San Beda College - High School in April 4, 1975, where Triskelion Boyet Gorospe and Bro. Oscar Esguerra were of the founders. The rationale behind this is, to be able to solve the recruitment problems in the collegiate levels since these High School students will eventually graduate and attend college in the future. This initiative was both simple and effective but the recruitment problem was somehow solved. A milestone in fraternity history in the Philippines, the Tau Gamma Phi was the first fraternity to have high school students as equal members. Although at first, because San Beda College - High School is an all male, non-coed school, thatonly male members of the Tau Gamma Phi are being recruited, but soon enough the popularity of the Fraternity and the effectivity of the program quickly spread to other colleges, universities and high schools across the University belt area, that already female High School students are also willing to join the Sorority. And saw the beginnings of the "Junior Lady Triskelions"nationwide. When other fraternities learned about this successful fraternal venture they followed suit. The Triskelion Youth Movement (T.Y.M.) (The TAU GAMMA PHI and TAU GAMMA SIGMA COMMUNITY CHAPTER) FOUNDATION, HISTORY, PURPOSE AND FUTURE ROLE: By: Monching Ocampo The Triskelion Youth Movement (TYM), since its very inception, has been quite controversial and to say the least, the most misunderstood and even maligned outreach movement of our fraternal organization. Perhaps, a brief yet historical account of its foundation would provide the brods with a positive outlook with regard to the TYM, the underlying reason for its foundation, its invaluable contribution to the fraternity's survival during the turbulent years of our fraternity's history and its positive role in the TAU GAMMA PHI's pursuit to excellence in the 21st century. First of all, let me reiterate, the TRISKELIONS GRAND FRATERNITY a.k.a. TAU GAMMA PHI's avowedpurpose and mission for existence is:" TO REFORM THE EXISTING FRATERNITY SYSTEM OF ENDLESS VIOLENT RUMBLES AND TRANSFORM IT INTO ONE WHERE FRATERNITIES, PROFESSING THE UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD OF MEN, CAN LIVE IN PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE AND ITS MEMBERS TO BE THE ROLE MODELS OF THE PHILIPPINE SOCIETY." The early years of the organization saw the fraternity being engaged in the pursuit of political excellence in the U.P. campus and was able to elect, among others, the
President of Arts and Sciences Student Council (the biggest council in the entire university) twice in a row. Prior to the declaration of martial law in 1972, our fraternity became embroiled in a series of rumbles against equally young fraternities like Beta Rho Omega, Tau Rho Xi, Scintilla Juris and Kappa Epsilon. Inevitably and ostensibly due to leftist leanings, the fraternity's office was raided under an Arrest-Search and Seizure order signed by Mr. So much so when we suffered our first fatality, Hernando Guevarra of Adamson University, who was killed in an ambush en-route to an S.O.S. mission, he specifically ordered no physical retaliation to be launched against the APO fraternity. In his words he said "let Nando's death be a lesson to all of us." Essentially, he called for a halt in the hostilities and ordered the brods to go back to school and instead of going to an offensive, just to be on a defensive mode against the enemy. The rumble erupted anew a few weeks later in the University of the Philippines when a certain member, now deceased, of the APO fraternity, the son of the then U.P. president, had a motorcycle accident near the campus, allegedly due to his own fault. Shortly thereafter, Bro Allen accepted gainful employment and stepped down from his position as Gen-Sec and asked me to take over. With rumbles erupting in the different chapters, there was not much choice for me but to accept until the crisis is over. From 1976, the fraternity became engaged in continuing, vicious and bloody rumbles against the APO fraternity. In 1977, with most chapter in rumble status against them and hearing that they may have sustained a few more fatalities from the many clashes against our Tarantulas, we could not hold a regional convention
reasonably anticipating that the APO fraternity will attack us in full force in retaliation. In fact at one time, 13 out of 14 recognized senior chapters of the fraternity had ongoing rumbles against the same, not to mention the other unrecognized chapters which was also engage in similar rumbles. This was no mere coincidence for we heard from intelligence reports that the order by the national council of the APO fraternity was to totally annihilate our fraternity until we've wiped out of the campuses. In the meantime, the fighting force of the fraternity dwindled down dramatically every semester, with the brods either going inactive, being sent home to provinces by their parents after learning of their Triskelion affiliation or simply being kicked-out of school for non-attendance due to rumbles. After seeing a mere 150-200 brods attend a regional convention in 1978, when our fraternity supposed to be numbering approximately 2,000. I exhorted the recruitment of new fighting members as a grave priority. In estimation at the rate the fighting ranks in each chapter were thinning out, from an average of 50-60 each chapter to an average of 25-30 and recruitment of senior brods being very difficult due to the prevailing rumble conditions, our fraternity's survival is definitely at stake and will be severely prejudiced, perhaps irreparably, in about 2-3 years. The successful revival-recruitment of the junior (high school) ranks starting at San Beda College, supplied much needed muscle in the university belt area struggle but being young and inexperienced and despite heroic hearts, I sadly concluded that they faced an unfair disadvantage against the enemy's overwhelming battle-hardened strike force which seems to be coming from all directions. In the latter part of 1978, several suggestions were being considered by the GT's, like the Tarantula-Brods dropping from school to fight against APO fraternity on a full time basis or calling on the alumni brods to assist us in the struggle, both of which I disapproved, reasoning that we are primarily students who are in school to graduate but who unfortunately, are entangled in a protracted war and I did not feel right about calling on the alumni brods who are probably striving hard to earn a living to feed their respective families. It was one of these meetings that someone mentioned that some out of school youth were interested to join our fraternity. As the brods debated for the issue and as I pondered about the interesting proposal there was some reservations in my mind about its propriety as the TAU GAMMA PHI has always been a campus-based fraternity and recruiting out-of-school youth may indeed, not be appropriate. However seeing that there was really no existing prohibition against such recruitment, and aptly guided by one of the tenets of the fraternity which states the part that..."from whatever cause man has come into being, for whatever reason he exists, to whatever purpose he is destined, kin to all living creatures around him, MAN IS BROTHER UNTO MAN..." I proposed the establishment and organization of the out-of-school youth outreach program of the fraternity to be henceforth known as the "TRISKELION YOUTH MOVEMENT (TYM)." I also reasoned that the main reason that many of the Philippine youth are out-of-school is because their parents simply cannot financially afford to send them to school and that is no reason for anyone to be refused
membership into the TAU GAMMA PHI. If at the same time, these out-of-school youth would incidentally, be able to provide much needed reinforcements to the ongoing struggle, so much the better. If I may so, take a contrary position is simply an elitist attitude which has no place in a dynamic brotherhood of men such as the TAU GAMMA PHI. As has always been practice during my term as Secretary-General from 1976-1979, this proposal or any major proposal for that matter, can only be approved by a unanimous vote of the GT's of the recognized chapters present, i.e., each chapter had veto power. As such the brods were enjoined to always attend the meetings, otherwise, they were pre-empted from challenging any decision of the Regional Council. Incidentally, please note that in all of these regional meetings almost all of these chapters attend each meeting and we always have a quorum, otherwise it was agreed that I will automatically resign from my position as Gen-Sec for lack of selfconfidence. To the best of my recollection, all 14 recognized chapters approved the establishment of the TYM in 1977 in Tejeron, Paco Manila. We were not able to work out the guidelines except that the TYM Brods who are under the direct supervision of any recognized senior chapter may be recruited by senior or junior brods but can only be initiated within the presence of senior brods to assure the conformity with fraternal initiation rites. As an afterthought, I also had a vision that maybe, eventually the TYM will also play a crucial role in the fraternity's future roles as grassroots political machinery since we already had a foretaste of the political arena in Assemblyman's Alinca's campaign. In addition, I envisioned the TYM community chapter to play a key role in the fraternity's civic action projects not only in Metro Manila but in the entire archipelago as soon as peaceful coexistence can be established with our rival fraternities. With the continuous influx of fresh members from the TYM sector, the war against the APO fraternity started to go in our favor and the survival of the fraternity was no longer at stake. The crisis was over. I decided not to run for another term as Secretary-General and relinquished the position to Bro. Jay de Castro whom I advise to put guidelines to the growing TYM ranks to assure control and direction, unfortunately, no guidelines were ever put into place and it is well known to many officers of the regional council that one or two of our founding fathers, particularly Bro. Rod Confessor and lately Bro. Roy Ordinario do not totally approve of the rationale or the establishment of the TYM. Sadly, I was not able to be physically present to fight for the TYM's welfare as I had to leave for the United States sometime in 1981. The TYM eventually developed into a community-based recruiting not only out-ofschool youth but full time students as well, from the most impoverished areas of Tondo to the most affluent Dasmarinas Village and from the provinces of Aparri to the remote areas of Jolo. It is worthy to note and to the best of my knowledge, the TYM ranks boasts of an incumbent congressman from Batangas, a practicing doctor from Texas, U.S.A., and many other professionals in the Philippine society.
It is the leaderships hope and dream that Triskelions worldwide would be able to respond to any emergency, calamity or situation wherein the spirit of "VOLUNTAS" or free will inherent in every member would be available to anyone in need, whether fellow members or the public at large
