Minimum percentage of steel prescribed in the IS: 456 code is derived by considering the probabi lity of cracking of the beams on the tension side. The mod ulus of rupture of concrete is computed by the empirical relation. For a rectangular section having width'b' and overall depth't / ', the value of section modulus. Z = (b tf / 6)

The minimum percentage of steel prescribed in the IS: 456 code is derived
by considering the probabi lity of cracking of the beams on the tension side
when the tension in concrete reaches a stress equal to the modul us of rup-
ture . Hence the main criterion for minimum percentage of stee l is
expressed as
[Strength of reinforced concrete beam) > [Strength as plain concrete
beam]
According to IS : 456 code, clause 6. 2.2 the mod ulus of rupture of
concrete is computed by the empirical relation.

For a rectangular section having width ' b' and overall depth ' t/', the value
of section modulus. Z = (b tf / 6) .
Hence M. =O.7 VJ::.(bd' /6) . . .(7.2)
