COURSE CODE : PHY 3602 COURSE TITLE : STATISTICAL MECHANICS

This question paper consists of two (2) printed pages (including cover page) with five (5) questions.

INSTRUCTION(S) TO CANDIDATES
DO NOT OPEN UNTIL YOU ARE ASKED TO DO SO
Answer all questions. Answer should be clear and intelligible. Justify your answer with simplification of intermediate steps for full marks. No book, notes and programmable calculator are permitted

2-

Any form of cheating or attempt to cheat is a serious offence which may lead to dismissal.

Answer all questions (FULL MARKS: 40)

Q1. Write the first law of thermodynamics using equation? Name the physical quantities which are used in this equation. (2+3 marks) Q2. Write down the relation between change of entropy and that of heat in the reversible and irreversible process. Name the physical quantities which are used in these relations. (2+2+1 marks) Q3. The temperature of an ideal gas at an initial pressure P1 and volume V1 is increased at constant volume until the pressure is doubled. The gas is then expanded isothermally until the pressure drops to its original value, where it is compressed at constant pressure until the volume returns to its initial value. (a) Sketch these processes in the P- V plane and in P- T plane. (3+3 marks) (b) Compute the work in each process and the total work done on the gas in the cycle. (3+1 marks)

Q4. Show that for a reversible adiabatic expansion in 1 mole of an ideal gas, with constant heat capacities C P and CV , TV 1 = constant, where C P / CV . (10 marks)

Q5. Consider the problem of the Schottky defects where the displaced atoms, causing vacancies, migrate to the surface of the crystal. (a) Find the entropy in the state when such a system consists of N atoms and possesses M defects. (5 marks) (b) Now consider the case where N >>1, M >>1 and N-M >> 1.Find the value of M, for which the entropy of the system is maximum. (5 marks)
