Electronic Devices and Circuits Lab Mini Project: Transistor As A Switch

This document describes using a transistor as an electronic switch in a circuit. The circuit includes a regulated power supply, breadboard, resistors, NPN transistor, and LED. When the base voltage rises, the collector and base current exponentially increase, causing the collector voltage to drop and allowing current to flow through the load (LED). Thus, the transistor acts as a switch to turn the LED on or off depending on the base voltage. The experiment involves building this circuit and observing that the LED glows brightly when the transistor is saturated and acts as a closed switch.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND CIRCUITS LAB MINI PROJECT

TRANSISTOR AS A SWITCH

AIM: To design and implement a circuit in which transistor works as a switch. COMPONENTS REQUIRED:
a)Regulated Dc power supply.

b)Bread board.
c)Resistors 1Kohm and 220kohm. d)A NPN transistor BC107 e)An LED.

THEORY:
Transistors are commonly used as electronic switches both for the higher power applications such as switched mode power supplies and for lower power supplies or applications such as logic gates. In ground emitter transistor circuit, such as light switch circuit ,as the base voltage rises, the collector and the base current rise exponentially, and the collector voltage drops because of the collector load resistance.

The relevant equations are VRc=ICE*RC

VRC = voltage across the load ( the lamp with resistance

RC) VRC +VCE=VCC ; the supply voltage; 5v. If VCE could fall to 0 (perfect closed switch), then VCC/Rc, even with higher base voltage and current. The transistor is then said to be saturated. Hence , values of input voltage can be chosen such that the output is either completely OFF or completely ON. The trasnisitor is acting as a switch and this type of operation is common in Digital cicuits, where only ON and OFF values are relevant.

(a)This would be the circuit diagram of the transistor behaving as a switch .The regulated power supply will be used to connect the circuit to 5v to 0v.IN this set up, the emitter will be grounded. The collector junction and the base terminals are connected to certain devices like LED and Resistors.

(b) thus when the circuit is closed ,giving a path for the currentto flow, the LED glows.

When the circuit is open the LED does not glow. This set up can also be used for higher power dissipating devices like relay lights etc, but with variations in the transistors ,power supply and the resistor specification. PROCEDURE: 1) connect the circuit as shown in the fig. 2)Ground the emitter of the transistor . 3)vary the voltage in the power supply so that the LED glows to the maximum intensity. 4)Observe the charecteristics of the circuit.
