Outline of the talk

Motivation Achievements of the Pilot Phase Proposed Areas and Virtual Labs Lessons learnt from the Pilot Phase Methodology for the Main Phase Virtual Labs at IIT Roorkee

Motivation
Physical Distances Limit Doing Experiments Sharing of Costly Equipment Quality Labs

Today most equipment come with a computer interface for control and data storage. It is possible to design experiments around some of these equipment which would enhance the learning of students. Internet-based experimentation further permits use of resources knowledge, software, and data available on the web

Objectives of the Pilot Phase

To crystallize the concept of a Virtual Lab, which will essentially comprise of a user-friendly graphical front-end, working in synchronization with a backend, possibly consisting of a simulation-engine running on a server or actual measurement data or a real experiment. To identify the suitable topics, where Virtual Labs will provide maximum benefit to the students using them. To develop approximately Ten Virtual Labs as a proof of concept

Achievements - Pilot Phase

Twenty-three Virtual Labs have been developed, integrated and are ready for field trials All labs are integrated to the main Virtual Labs website: www.vlab.co.in All these Virtual Labs have
Related Material / Manuals / Additional resources Step-by-step procedures Quiz to test the understanding

Trial runs are underway Feedback is being collected in order to refine the Virtual Labs

Objectives of the Virtual Lab Project (Main DPR)

To identify suitable topics where Virtual Labs will provide maximum benefit to a large number of students using them. To design these Virtual Lab which will essentially comprise of a user-friendly graphical front-end, working in synchronization with a backend, possibly consisting of a simulation-engine running on a server or actual measurement data or a remotely-triggered experiment. To develop approximately one hundred and fifty

Intended Users
College Students who do not have access to expensive equipment/ lab-facilities. High-school students, whose imagination will be triggered, possibly motivating them to take up higher-studies. Researchers in different institutes who can collaborate and share expensive equipment and resources. Different engineering colleges, who can benefit from the content and related teaching resources.

Types of Virtual Labs
