Velocity Limitations
In selecting a valve for either a liquid or gas/vapour
application one of the major considerations is the effect of
fluid velocity. High velocity could lead to operational
problems including erosion, excessive vibration and
instability. The following tables indicate the maximum
recommended velocity values for liquid and gas/vapour
services.
Table 6. Recommended Maximum Velocities for Liquid Service for Microspline and Contoured Trims

Inherent Rangeability
The inherent rangeability of a control valve is the ratio
between maximum and minimum flow within the working
characteristic at constant pressure drop.

General Selection Information
The information detailed is intended to act as a general
guide, to assist in the selection of an Introl Series 12 control
valve.

Trim Cv Calculation
A full description of the procedures used for calculating the
Cv on various fluids is detailed in the Introl Sizing and
Selection Manual

Body Selection
Generally, the valve body must be capable of supporting the
selected trim design without producing excessive velocity
The following tables can be used as a guide for determining
the maximum recommended body velocities for liquid and
gas/vapour applications.

Liquid Service
The velocity guidelines detailed in Table 3 below, reflect the
normal inlet and outlet maximum velocities recommended
to eliminate body erosion and prevent trim instability. Other
factors may reduce the following figures further. Refer to
Introl sizing and selection manual.

allowable noise levels.

Trim Inherent Rangeability

The inherent rangeability of a valve trim is dependant on a number
of factors including size and style. The values detailed in Table 5
below provide a general guideline to the maximum achievable
values.

Inherent Flow Characteristics
The inherent flow characteristics of a control valve is the
relationship between in the flow and the valve travel at
constant pressure drop. As with all caged multihole trims the
actual characteristics may vary slightly from the true curve.

Maximum Leakage Rates

Leakage rates are normally measured in accordance with
the ANSI/FCI70-2-1976 specification using the class
designation. The following Table 6 defines the achievable
leakage class for each available plug design.

Classic 20 - Features

General.
The Classic Series 20 valve developed by Kent lntrol, will in its basic
form satisfy the majority of general control valve applications where
tight shut-off is not an essential requirement. The construction of this
range of valves is of a simple form using the traditional top and
bottom guided trim philosophy. For high pressure drop applications
the range can be fitted with the High Friction trim design.

Performance:
■■ High flow capacity.
■■ Excellent flow control rangeability.
■■ Cast globe type body proportioned to withstand high pipe
stresses.
■■ Minimum differential plug areas to reduce actuator force
requirements.

Design Flexibility:
■■ Optional anti-cavitation/low noise trim option for high pressure
drop applications.
■■ Inherently characterised trim offered in equal percentage or
linear.
■■ All trim components removable from the top for ease of
maintenance.
■■ Multi trim sizes available.
■■ Full range of body and trim material options.
■■ Fully rationalised and interchangeable features.
■■ Full range of bonnet and packing designs to suit various
application requirements.

Design Integrity:
■■ Heavy duty top and bottom guided construction.
■■ Large diameter stems.
■■ Generously proportioned seat rings screwed into body to
ensure a leak proof joint.

Quality Manufacturing:
■■ Rigorously tested to ensure specified performance on site.
■■ Quality assurance systems certified to BS 5750 Part 1 1987,
IS0 9001 1987, EN 29001/1987, Certificate No. Q5081.
■■ Optional full NACE MR-01-75 certification.

2
Guide to Bonnet Selection
Selection of the bonnet design is undertaken on the basis of both the
operating temperature range and fluid media being handled. Figures
2 to 4 illustrate the bonnet design options available for use with the
Series 20 range.

Table 1 below provides a general guide to the temperature limitations

of various bonnet designs and packing materials available. Where
fluid working temperatures below 0°C (32°F) and above 250°C
(482°F) are specified, normalising bonnets are recommended to
protect the valve packing against extremes of temperature.

The Bellows Seal Bonnet option ensures absolute sealing of the

process fluid within their rated pressure and temperature ranges. An
auxiliary packing box in the upper bonnet serves as an emergency
seal in the unlikely event of bellows failure.

Fabricated extension bonnets in stainless steel are available as a

special option when a longer extension is required on cryogenic
service.

Introl Series 30 - Features

General
The Series 30 valve is a three-way design of valve for use on
blending two separate flows, by having two inlets and a
common outlet port, or dividing a flow into two proportional
parts by having one common inlet and two outlet ports. This
range of valves has been designed in three forms
designated 30, 31 and 32, the first incorporating an inside
seating trim (Fig. 1 ) to provide an economic solution for all
mixing and selected diverting services. Series 31
incorporates an outside seating trim (Fig. 2) which is
specifically designed for high duty diverting service
applications, while the Series 32 uses a balanced plug for
diverting service. Size for size the Design Cv of the trims is
the same regardless of the selected seating arrangement.
An additional Series 32 valve is also available with balanced
trim for high differential pressure shut-off.

Performance:
Figure 1. Introl Series 30 - Inside Seating
• High flow capacity.
• Leakage capability - better than ANSI Class IV and
consistent with normal single seat valve specifications.
• High rangeability - well in excess of usual control
system requirements.

Design Flexibility:
• The availability of either an inner or an outer seated
design to minimise any flow instabilities.
• Standard or normalising bonnets options to suit
temperature conditions.
• Bellows seal available for positive leak proof stem seal.
• Wide range of interchangeable trim sizes.
• Full range of body and trim materials available.

High Duty Parts:

• Heavy duty top guide with additional skirt guiding on
the plug - effective in both seats.
• Seats are generously proportioned and are screwed into

• Case globe type body one piece construction with Quality Manufacturing:

Part 1 1987/ IS0 9001 1987/ EN29001/1987.
• Deep all purpose packing box accommodating a variety
of proprietary packings. • Optional full NACE MR-01-75 certification.

Flow Coefficient (Cv)

All Cv values given in the following table are stated in U.S.
units. The values given are with one port closed. Full
procedure for calculating Cv values is detailed in Introl
Sizing and Selection Manual.

Inherent Rangeability:
The inherent rangeability of a valve trim is dependent on a
number of factors including size and style. The values
detailed in Table 1 below provide a general guideline to the
maximum achievable values.

Valves
Trim Size Rangeability

Plug Characteristic:
The inherent flow characteristic of the control valve is the
relationship between the flow and lift of the plug at a
constant pressure drop.
The characteristic of the linear “V” port used on both the
Series 30 and 31 valve plug heads is shown in Fig. 6.

Guide to Valve Selection

• Bonnets
Where fluid working temperatures of above 250°C or
below 0°C are specified, normalising bonnets are
recommended to protect the packing against extremes
of temperature. In both cases the standard form of
connection is the bolted bonnet arrangement.
• W Bellows Seal Bonnet
Bellows seal valves ensure absolute sealing within their
rated pressure and temperature ranges. An auxiliary
packing box in the upper bonnet serves as an
emergency seal in the unlikely event of bellows failure.
• Diverting Duties
The Introl Series 30 valve fitted with the Introl Actuator
may be used for selected diverting duty as shown in
Table 7.
• Packing
A full range of packing materials are available.
