Rational Function: Hello There.

Rational functions are quotients of polynomial functions that can be expressed as f(x) = p(x) / q(x) where p(x) and q(x) are polynomial functions and q(x) ≠ 0. The domain of a rational function is all real numbers except any values that make the denominator equal to zero. Vertical asymptotes occur at the lines or values of x where the graph does not touch due to the denominator approaching zero from both sides. As x approaches infinity or negative infinity, the value of a rational function may approach a constant horizontal line, known as a horizontal asymptote.

RATIONAL FUNCTION

Hello there..

Rational Function= quotients of polynomial function.

Therefore, it can be expressed as: f(x) = p(x) q(x) where p(x) and q(x) are polynomial function and q(x) 0

1. Finding domain of rational function

a) f(x) = x2 - 9
Solution: -Denominator of f(x) will be zero if x=3. Thus, x cannot be equal to 3. -Domain of f ={xlx 3} or -Domain of f = (-,3) U (3, ) x3

2. Arrow Notation
Symbol xa+ xax Meaning x approaches a from the right x approaches a from the left x approaches infinity; that is, x increase without bound. x approaches negative infinity; that is, x decrease without bound.

3. Vertical asymptote
-Vertical asymptote = The line along yaxis or value of x which graph do not touch. - It is represented by dashed lines.

Let
The domain of f is the set of all real numbers
except 3, since 3 makes the denominator zero and the division by zero is not allowed in mathematics. let us evaluate function f at values of x close to 3 such that x < 3. The values are shown in the table below:
x 1 2 2.5 2.8 2.9 2.99 2.999 2.99999

f (x)

-1

-2

-4

-10

-20

-200

-2000

-2*105

-Let us now evaluate f at values of x close to 3 such that x > 3.

5 1 4 2 3.5 4 3.2 10 3.1 20 3.01 200 3.001 2000 3.00001 2*105

x f (x)

-The graph of f is shown below.

Notes 1 - As x approaches 3 from the left or by values smaller than 3, f (x) decreases without bound. 2 - As x approaches 3 from the right or by values larger than 3, f (x) increases without bound. We say that the line x = 3, broken line, is the vertical asymptote for the graph of f.

Horizontal asymptote

Let

1 - Let x increase and find values of f (x).

x f (x)

1 3

10 2.1

103 2.001

106 2.000001

2 - Let x decrease and find values of f (x).

x f (x)

-1 1

-10 1.9

-103 1.999

-106 1.999999

-As | x | increases, the numerator is dominated by the term 2x and the numerator has only one term x. Therefore f(x) takes values close to 2x / x = 2. -See graphical behavior below.

In general, the line y = b is a horizontal asymptote for the graph of f if f (x) approaches a constant b as x increases or decreases without bound.
