Formation of A Formal Engineering Report

The document provides guidelines for formatting an engineering report, including sections for the title, apparatus, diagrams, method, results, calculations, graphs, and conclusions. Key sections include the title stating the objective, labeled diagrams, step-by-step method written impersonally, results in a table with units, reasonable scales for graphs, and conclusions justified by the data.

FORMATION OF A FORMAL ENGINEERING REPORT

TITLE OBJECTIVE: This should be a consice and clear statement as to what it is you are trying to achieve. APPARATUS: This will the type of instructments used during the pratical and quoting the serial number if necessary. DIAGRAMS: The circuit diagram clearly labelled. METHOD: This should consist of a series of numbered pragraphs that describe each step of the procedure carried out. This section of the report(as with the rest) should be impersonal and in the past tense. Words such as I,WE, THEY, US should not be used. Thus, instead of writing a phrse such as We set the voltage to 0v and I adjusted it in0.1v steps..... you should write the voltage was set to 0v and the adjusted in 0.1v steps............ RESULTS: All measurments should be in tabulated form

with units ontop of it to avoid writing units alongside every figures in the body of the table. CALCULATIONS: This section may not be required, but if it is, all calculation carried out in the experiment should be done in this bit. GRAPHS: If any graph is required in your experiment, try to choose a reasonable scale say 0.1,0.2,0.5.............10 000 not 0.3.0.4...... It makes it more easier to plot and read the graph. CONCLUSIONS: Having gone through the procdures, you need to draw a conclusion based on all the data

gathered. And such conclusion must be justified. E.g say you plot a graph y against x and the graph is a striaght line graph, you may draw a conclusion: Since this graph is striaght line graph and it starts from the origin, the y is proportional to x.
