Math Comparing and Ordering Numbers Lesson

This lesson plan is for a grade 3 math class on counting by 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s. The 50-minute lesson will have students representing and stating number sequences using various skip counting patterns. Students will practice skip counting forwards and backwards using number lines and hundreds charts. The lesson begins with counting paper sheets in groups to demonstrate skip counting by 5s. Students will then create their own number lines skip counting by 5s and 10s from given starting points. Number lines will be checked in pairs and placed on colored hundreds charts. The lesson closes with a problem solved together on the smart board.

a. Observe, represent, and state the sequence of numbers for a given skip counting pattern (forwards or backwards) including by 5s, 10s, or 100s using any starting point by 3s, 4s, or 25s using starting points that are multiples of 3, 4, and 25.

Materials
Number Line handouts 130 blank pages 100s chart SMART board

Preparation
Print from Math Makes Sense program: 100s Chart (blue, green, peach, yellow, white) Number lines (white)

Prerequisite learning
Skip counting by 2s; comparing and ordering numbers

Assessment
Completion of number charts.

Time
10 min

Set
1. Show large collection of paper (110 pages) tell students you know there are 110 sheets. 2. Show pile of 20 pages (dont say how many) and tell students you want to know how many pages there are. Q: What can we do to make counting easier? (use groups, skip count, etc) 3. Tell students you want to use groups (what kind of groups can we use?). 4. Tell students you want to use groups of 5. Volunteers to make groups of 5 and class counts by 5s from 110 as each pile of paper is added. Q: Why did we count forward? When would we count back? 5. Draw a line on the board and have students skip count 110 130. 6. Do another number line by 10s

Time

Development
1. Distribute number lines (4 per student) and have them create their own number lines starting from various numbers and skip counting by 5s and 10s Choose from: 9, 0, 73, 16, 5, 24, 48, 162, 110 a. Choose any number and direction to start, and skip count by 5 or 10. b. Choose any number to start, skip count up by 5. c. Choose a number from the list, skip count up by 10 d. Choose a number from the list, skip count down by 5 2. Trade number lines with a partner and check them over. 3. Show all the number lines on hundreds charts (coloured paper matches each number line)
