3.2 Freeboard Length: Rules For The Classification of Steel Ships Definitions 3.1 Rule Length

The document defines freeboard length (L) as the distance on the waterline at 85% of the least moulded depth from the stem to the center of the rudder stock, which must be at least 96% of the total length. For ships with a raked keel, the waterline is parallel to the designed waterline at 85% of the least moulded depth, found by drawing a line from the keel tangent to the sheer line of the freeboard deck. The least moulded depth is measured from the top of the keel to the top of the freeboard deck beam at the point of tangency.

3.2 Freeboard length

3.2.1 For ships having a service notation other than passenger ships or ro-ro passenger ship, the freeboard length LLL is the distance, in m, on the waterline at 85% of the least moulded depth from the top of the keel, measured from the forward side of the stem to the centre of the rudder stock. LLL is to be not less than 96% of the total length on the same waterline. 3.2.2 In ship design with a rake of keel, the waterline on which this length is measured is parallel to the designed waterline at 85% of the least moulded depth Dmin found by drawing a line parallel to the keel line of the ship (including skeg) tangent to the moulded sheer line of the freeboard deck. The least moulded depth is the vertical distance measured from the top of the keel to the top of the freeboard deck beam at side at the point of tangency (See Fig 2).
