Ionic Bonding

The document discusses the structure and properties of ionic compounds. It explains that ionic compounds form crystalline lattices with cations and anions arranged in a repeating pattern. The strength of attraction between the ions determines the stability and melting point of the compound, with more stable structures having more ion-ion attractions. Sodium chloride is used as an example, being noted to conduct electricity when molten or dissolved but not when solid.

A sodium atom transfers its outermost electron to a chlorine atom. This means that a salt crystal is made of one sodium cation and one chlorine anion.

The more attraction there is between the positive and negative ions, the more energy is released. The more energy that is released, the more energetically stable the structure becomes. That means that to gain maximum stability, you need the maximum number of attractions.

Ionic compounds when solid are composed of a giant ionic lattice. Regular arrangement of repeating ions based on the stoichiometry of the compound and the relative charges of the ions. Ionic crystals have fixed shapes and angles. For elements of a similar period, the anion is typically significantly larger than the cation (which fill the interstitial holes in the lattice of anions).

NaCl has a relatively high melting point. NaCl does not conduct electricity when solid. NaCl conducts electricity when molten. NaCl dissolves in polar solvents to form solutions that conduct electricity TIP: consider what it actually means for NaCl to be in a molten state or in solution.
