Project

The document outlines an experimental investigation into geopolymer concrete as a more sustainable alternative to traditional Portland cement concrete. Students will create geopolymer concrete cubes and beams using locally available and cheap materials like fly ash and rice husk ash, and compare the results of conventional and steam curing methods through a variety of tests. By replacing cement entirely, the project aims to reduce the material's environmental impact while utilizing agricultural and industrial byproducts. A timeline is provided laying out the casting, curing, and testing schedule to be completed by mid-December 2007.

THINK GEOPOLYMER
Introduction:
 Several efforts are in progress to reduce the use
of portland cement in concrete in order to
address the global warming issues.
 These include the utilization of supplementary
cementing materials such as flyash, silica fume,
granulated blast furnace slag, rice-husk ash and
metakaolin.
 In this respect the geopolymer technology shows
considerable promise for application in the
concrete industry.
Geopolymer concrete:
It is a mixture of ingredients like source materials
(silicon and Aluminium), alkaline liquids (NaoH
or KoH and sodium silicate or potassium
silicate), fly ash or rice husk, fine aggregate,
coarse aggregate, water.
Our Contribution:
We are going to make cubes and beams using
cheaply available materials like flyash and rice-
husk.
Curing Methods: Steam curing and Conventional
curing.
Various tests are going to be conducted, and then
the results are compared with control elements.
Here we are completely replacing the cement
whose cost is at peak.
