The opening scene establishes the mood as one of panic and confusion through the main character Shaun. Shaun is shown to be distressed on a train, looking around nervously as ominous music plays. Through close-ups and tracking shots, the camera focuses on Shaun to characterize him as mysterious and confused. The female character who speaks to Shaun is introduced, but she receives less focus. Camera movements like tilting shots add to the dizzy, disoriented feeling that mirrors Shaun's state of mind and sets expectations for a thriller genre through techniques like mysterious music, intense interactions, and a sense of panic and unease.

How the Mood is Established

The mood is established through Shaun who at first is sleeping and hes on a train so everything seems relaxed and normal, except for the nondiegetic sound of planes and bombs suggesting that inside this man is panicking and scared. When he wakes up these emotions are portrayed through him desperately looking around with wide eyes and is jumpy to every sound, the mood of the people around him seems either relaxes, like the women, or intense like the two other men. The music is ominous when he starts to talk about him being a pilot. This sets more of an mysterious and dark mood. The tracking shot and eye-line match connects us to him and gives a confused mood and quite dizzy which links with his mood.

How the characters are established and shown to the audience.

Shaun is established right at the beginning as the main character as it starts with a close-up on his face and throughout the scene her has the most camera time. The audience focuses on him as he is shown to be quite mysterious and confused, and we want to know why. He is shown to be very out of place and panicked so the audience are drawn into this. The women in the seen is established at she is the first person to talk to must be an important character. She obviously knows Shaun and is portrayed as being very caring towards him as she worries about him. However, she talks a lot about what the audience dont care about which makes her shown to be quite annoying. The characters around them are shown to be quite aggressive but get very little camera time so are obviously not important.

What camera shots and movement are used to draw attention to the genre and characterisation?
The close-up at the beginning of the scene draws attraction to Shaun as an important character. There are various other medium close-ups that keep the attention on his emotions and keeps us connected to his character. The Over the shoulder shot of the woman puts us in the position of Shaun as we do not know what she is talking about either so keeps with the idea of confusion. The camera moves with the train making it seem more jumpy which links in with Shaun. Wide shots and medium close-ups of different people in the film gives us an idea of panic and mystery which links with the genre of a Thriller. The wide shot that includes both characters makes the scene more intense which keeps with the genre of the thriller and concentrates on those two characters as main characters. There is a tracking shot on Shaun which again draws attention to him being an important character and the fact the camera is tilting makes us feel dizzy which links with the genre of thriller and links to his emotions at the point as he feels sick and confused.

How the location of the film sets up our expectations of the films genre.
