A file is a collection of data stored in one unit, identified by a filename. It can be a document, picture, audio or video stream, data library,application, or other collection of data. Following table shows few general types of file with its extension and abbreviation.

About file
EXE is the common filename extension denoting an executable file (a program) in the DOS, OpenVMS, Microsoft Windows, Symbian, and OS/2 operating systems. A Batch file is a text file containing a series of commands intended to be executed by the command interpreter. Adobe PDF is used for representing two-dimensional documents in a manner independent of the application software, hardware, and operating system. In computing, JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for photographic images. PNG is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not for print graphics. DLL is a collection of small programs, which can be called upon when needed by the executable program (EXE) that is running.It lets the executable communicate with a specific device such as a printer etc.., MP3 is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage. SIS is an installation file for Symbian OS for mobile. Software developers generally use JAR files to distribute Java applications or libraries, in the form of classes and associated metadata and resources (text, images, etc.) JAR files build on the ZIP file format. HTML is the predominant markup language for web pages.
