1. Aum, this syllable is all this. An

aoimTyetd=rimd”sv] tSyopVy;<y;n' explanation of that. All that is past, the
.ut' .v≥iv„yidit svRmo˚;r Ev 0 present and the future, all this is only the
syllable aum. And whatever else there is
yÇ;Nyt9 +k;l;t7t' tdPyo˚;r Ev 00!00 beyond the threefold time, that too is only
the syllable aum.
2. All this is verily, Brahman. This self is
svR” Áetd9 b[ ˜;ym;Tm; b˜ Brahman. This same self has four quarters.

3. The first quarter is Vaisvanara, whose
j;girtSq;no bih„[pD" sπ;© sphere is the waking state, who cognises
Ekoniv'xitmu," SqUl.uGvwŒ;nr" external objects, who has seven limbs and
nineteen mouths and who experiences
p[ qm" p;d" 00#00 gross objects.
4. The second quarter is taijasa, whose
SvµpSq;noåNt"[pD" sπ;© Ekoniv'xitmu," sphere is the dream state, who cognises
p[ iviv†.uk9 twjso √t7y" p;d" 00$00 internal objects, who has seven limbs and
nineteen mouths, and who experiences the
subtle objects.
5. Where one, being fast asleep, does not
y+ suπo n kçn k;m' k;myte desire any desire whatsoever and does not
n kçn Svµp' p≈yit tTsuWπu m9 0 see any dream whatsoever, that is deep
sleep. The third quarter is prajna, whose
suWπu Sq;n Ek7.Ut" p[ D;n`n Ev;nNdmyo sphere is the state of deep sleep, who has
become one, who is verily, a mass of
Á;nNd.uk9 cetomu," p[ ;DStOt7y" p;d" 00%00 cognition, who is full of bliss and who
experiences bliss, whose face is thought.
 6. This is the lord of all, this is the knower
EW svŒr EW svRD EWoåNty;RMyeW of all, this is the inner controller; this is the
yoin" svRSy p[ .v;Pyyø ih .Ut;n;m9 00^00 source of all; this is the beginning and the
end of beings.
7. Turiya is not that which cognises the
N;;Nt"[pD' n bih„[pD' no.yt"[pD' n internal, not that which cognises the
p[ D;n`n' n p[ D' n;[pDm9 0 external, not what cognises both of them,
not a mass of cognition, not cognitive, not
a΢mVyvh;yRmg[ ;Áml=5micNTym– non-cognitive. It is unseen, incapable of
being spoken of, unnameable, the essence
Vypde≈ymek;Tm[pTyys;r' p[ pçopxm' of the knowledge of the one self, that into
which the world is resolved, the peaceful,
x;Nt' ixvm√wt' ctuq] the benign, the non-dual, such, they think,
is the fourth quarter. He is the self; He is to
mNyNte s a;Tm; s ivDey" 00&00 be known.
8. This is the self, which is of the nature
Soåym;Tm;å?y=rmo˚;roåi/m;+' p;d; m;+; of the syllable aum, in regard to its
m;+;ƒ p;d; ak;r ¶k;ro mk;r Iit 00*00 elements. The quarters are the elements, the
elements are the quarters, namely the letter,
a, the letter u, and the letter m.
9. Vaisvanara, whose sphere is the
j;girtSq;no vwŒ;nroåk;r" p[ qm; waking state, is the letter a, the first
m;+;ååπer;idm_v;√;µpoit h vw element, either from the root ap to obtain
or from being the first. He who knows this,
sv;RNk;m;n;idƒ .vit y Ev' ved 00(00 obtains, verily, all desires, also he becomes
first.
10. Taijasa, whose sphere is the dream
SvµpSq;nStwjs ¶k;ro i√t7y; state, is the letter u, the second element,
m;+oTkW;Rd.u yTv;√oTkWRit h vw from exaltation or inter-mediateness. He
who knows this exalts, verily, the
D;nsNtit' sm;nƒ .vit continuity of knowledge and he becomes
equal; in his family is born no one who
n;Sy;[b˜ivTkule .vit y Ev' ved 00!)00 does not know Brahman.
11. Prajna, whose sphere is the state of
suWπu Sq;n" p[ ;Do mk;rStOt7y; m;+; deep sleep is the letter m, the third element,
imterp7tev;R imnoit h v; Id” either from the root mi, to measure or
because of merging. He who knows this
svRmp7itƒ .vit y Ev' ved 00!!00 measures all this and merges also.
12. The fourth is that which has no
am;+ƒtuqoRåVyvh;yR" p[ pçopxm" ixvoå√wt elements, which cannot be spoken of, into
Evm;e˚;r a;Tmwv s'ivxTy;Tmn;Tm;n' y Ev' which the world is resolved, benign, non-
dual. Thus the syllable aum is the very self.
ved y Ev' ved 00!@00 He who knows it thus enters the self with
his self.
