Antigen
The cells that can "present" antigen include B cells and cells oI the monocyte lineage
(including macrophages).
Adaptive Vs Innate Immunity
The human body is a very unique vessel in the sense that it is composed oI complex body
systems that Iunction altogether in a harmonious manner. An imbalance in even just one system
will already lead to the suIIering oI the entire system. In this regard, there are many Iactors or
agents that cause this imbalance. An imbalance, popularly known as disease, is amazingly Iended
oII by the body itselI with the use oI its unique lines oI biologic deIenses (immunities).
There are two types oI immunities namely innate and adaptive immunity. By looking into the
term itselI, you are already given an idea oI how each Iorm oI immunity diIIers. The conIusion
sets in because each term also comes with many other diIIerent alternative terms.
Innate is thus an inherent immunity (deIense) that is already present at birth. It Iends oII generic
micro-organisms thus preventing their entry into the body system like tissues and cells. By
generic, this means that it does not attack any speciIic organism (general purpose). That`s why
innate immunity is also called non speciIic immunity.
An example oI how beautiIul the innate immunity operates is exempliIied in the skin`s natural
action to serve as the Iirst-line barrier against surIace microorganisms. Secondly, body secretions
contain lysozymes that naturally Iight any Ioreign invaders. Even the coughing and sneezing
action is a Iorm oI deIense mechanism oI the body. However, in the case wherein the
microorganisms have already entered the system the innate immunity will try its best to handle it
beIore it causes any damage or produce a certain disorder.
