Composite Functions Example

(1) The composite function f g does not exist because the range of g is not contained within the domain of f. (2) The largest possible domain of g that would allow f g to be a function is (e-2, ∞) . (3) With this domain, f g is defined as f g(x) = 2 - 1/ln(x + 2) , with domain (e-2, ∞) and range (1,2).

The functions f and g are defined by: 2x +1 f :x , x > 0, x +1 g : x 1 + ln ( x + 2 ) , x > 0 .

. (i) Explain why the composite function f g does not exist. (ii) Find the largest possible domain of g such that f g is a function. (iii) With the domain found in (ii), define f g is a similar form and give its range.
(i) We consider point (1) in our summary. From the sketch, the range of g is ( , ) .

From the question, the domain of f is ( 0, ) . Since the range of g the domain of f, f g does not exist. (ii) We consider point (1) in our summary. For f g to exist, we will need to change the domain of g so that we could have its range become ( 0, ) , to match the domain of f. Consider 1 + ln ( x + 2 ) = 0 ln ( x + 2 ) = 1 [ We find the x-intercept first, i.e. y = 0 . ] x+2=e x = e2 Now the domain of g given by ( e 2, ) will produce a range of g that matches the range of f. This is also the largest possible domain of g.
(iii) We consider points (2) and (3) in our summary. f g ( x ) = f ( 1 + ln ( x + 2 ) ) = 2 ( 1 + ln ( x + 2 ) ) + 1 1 + ln ( x + 2 ) + 1

2 ln ( x + 2 ) 1 ln ( x + 2 )

= 2

The domain of f g is the domain of g that we found in (ii), i.e. ( e 2, ) . In a similar form, f g : x 2

1 ln ( x + 2 )

1 , x > e2 ln ( x + 2 )

The range of g is ( 0, ) . This becomes the input for the function f to give a range of y-values. From the sketch, the range of f g is (1, 2 ) . Range of 2 f g: (1, 2 ) 1 Range of g: ( 0, ) y=2
