A Personalized Ontology Mining For Web Information Retrival

This document discusses a personalized ontology mining model for improving web information retrieval. The model proposes learning ontological user profiles from both global knowledge bases and individual user information repositories. This hybrid approach aims to better discover and represent a user's background knowledge by integrating global and local analysis. The personalized ontology model was evaluated against benchmarks and proved successful in acquiring required user information. The project also extends previous work on ontological mapping to further enhance personalized user profiles.

A PERSONALIZED ONTOLOGY MINING FOR WEB INFORMATION RETRIVAL

ABSTRACT The Web may be defined as the universal, all encompassing space containing all Internet resources. As the number of Internet users and the number of accessible Web pages grows, it is becoming increasingly difficult for users to find documents that are relevant to their particular needs. Search engines do a great job of returning relevant results for some queries and a poor when a large number of irrelevant results may be considered to be relevant. Ontology is a formal description and specification of knowledge. By using an ontology, information systems are expected to be able to understand the semantic meaning of words and phrases, and be able to compare information items by concepts instead of keywords. Ontologies are widely used to represent user profiles in personalized web information gathering. However, when representing user profiles, many models have utilized only knowledge from either a global knowledge base or a user local information. In this project, a personalized ontology model is proposed, that learns ontological user profiles from both world knowledge base and user local instance repositories. Hence user background knowledge can be better discovered and represented while we integrate global and local analysis within a hybrid model. This ontology model has been compared with several benchmark models and evaluated and proved to be a successful in acquiring user required information. This project also extends the study on ontological mapping that will improve the performance of personalized user profiles.
