Data Grid Vs Data Form

Data grids allow advanced users to freely analyze and navigate data, selecting members from dimension hierarchies. However, data grids are less secure than data forms and do not offer formatting options or the ability to export to Excel. Data forms provide a predefined, rigid interface for simple users to manually enter data. Data forms restrict the point of view and require special access to modify, but offer greater formatting and allow exporting to Excel. Both data grids and data forms have their uses depending on the specific reporting needs.

Data Grid Data grids are the equivalent of pivot tables in excel.

It should be used for ad hoc purposes to view / analyze data in whatever form you choose. The user has the flexibility to choose what they see in the rows, columns and page dimensions Data grids are meant for the advanced user, who needs to create and manage his own grids to navigate freely in the data (metadata security applies) for analysis (ad hoc) operations. These users must be trained on the structures designed for the application -i.e. metadata (dimensions and hierarchies). Data grids are more flexible for data analysis but not secure Data Grid allows user to select any members from the dimensions hierarchy Date Grids can be modified by any user having viewall access Run consolidation, translation, promotion is possible from data grids Data Grid does not offer much formatting options Export to excel is not available in data grid

Data Form

Data entry forms are pre defined and are generally used to manually input data into reporting

Usually we use data forms for the simple users, users who should enter hfm post their data and exit without having to know too much about the structure of the hfm application data forms are rigid and secure Data forms restricts user to a particular POV. To modify data forms you need to have special access. Data forms users can only run calculations. Data entry forms offer greater formatting options You can export data forms to excel

At the end of the day, they are similar and there is no reason why we cant have (use) both. It all depends on local needs on how best we use both.
