Practical 01-01 - Cabling

This document discusses different types of RJ45 cabling used in computer networks. It describes straight through cables which have the same wire order on both ends and are used to connect hosts to switches or hubs. Crossover cables reverse the wire order on one end and are used to connect hubs together, hosts directly, or hubs to switches. Roll over cables reverse the entire wire sequence on one end and are used to connect PCs running terminal programs to Cisco hardware. The document provides diagrams and examples of the different cable types and their typical uses.

Version 1.0
Cabling

This practical session makes you comfortable with cabling you see on a regular basis.
As you are going through computer networks, you must be aware of some
fundamental issues associated with cabling. It is a part of physical layer of network
layered architecture.

RJ 45 Cable:

In RJ 45 cable, what you will see is a cable containing 4 pairs of wires (total 8 wires)
which are coloured and a connector where the wires conclude. There are 3 different
types of RJ 45 cable.

1. Straight through cable:

In straight through cable the coloured wires are in the same order at the both ends.

2. Cross Over Cable:

In a crossover cable, the first (far left) coloured wire at one end of the cable is the
third coloured wire at the other end of the cable.

3. Roll Over Cable:
In a rolled cable, the colored wires at one end of the cable are in the reverse sequence
of the colored wires at the other end of the cable.

Use of RJ 45:

The different types of RJ 45 cables are used for different purposes. The following
table describes the purpose of each type.
