Are full-sentence statements reecting those big ideas you sketched out before the particulars of what you want them to understand about that idea. Can only be gained through inference; they are not facts. They are usually not obvious, often counterintuitive, and easily misunderstood by students. (see UbD workbook for the difference between factual knowledge, discrete skills and big ideas and generalizations/ principles) May provide a conceptual foundation for basic skills. Concepts are embedded in skills. Can be topical or overarching.
The sentence stem Students will understand that will help you properly frame your EUs. Sample Enduring Understandings Computer technology both inuences and is inuenced by our society. Success in the workplace requires the ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people. Data can be displayed in ways that can inuence the reader to draw certain conclusions. There are ways to measure things without physical tools (e.g., proportions and formulas are portable measurement tools). Communication can inuence or be inuenced by society and environment. Effective communication requires the use of conventions. The Arts reect and shape culture and history. The natural environment shapes humans and culture. Citizenship involves recognition of individual rights and responsibility for political participation and is related to personal social, economic, and political choice. Effective communication uses appropriate vocabulary, correct language structure, and patterns. Successful communication requires knowledge of culture and customs.
