Amlodipine

Amliodipine is a calcium channel blocker that inhibits the movement of calcium ions across cardiac and arterial cell membranes. This inhibits calcium flow and the formation of electrical impulses in the heart, slowing conduction and depressing contractility. These effects decrease cardiac work and oxygen demand, and increase oxygen delivery, especially in patients with vasospastic angina. Amliodipine is indicated for angina due to coronary spasm, chronic stable angina, and hypertension. Common side effects include dizziness, edema, and gastrointestinal upset. Nurses should carefully monitor blood pressure and cardiac rhythm when administering amlodipine.

MODE OF ACTION Generic Inhibits the Name: movement of AMLODIPINE calcium ions across the Brand Name: membranes

of Norvasc cardiac and arterial muscle Classificatio cells; inhibits n: transmembrane -Antianginal calcium flow, which results in Antihypertensi the depression of ve impulse formation -Calcium in specialized channel cardiac pacemaker blocker cells, slowing of the velocity of Dosage: conduction of the 5 mg OD cardiac impulse, depression of myocardial contractility, and dilation of coronary arteries and arterioles and peripheral arterioles; these effects lead to decreased cardiac work, decreased cardiac oxygen consumption, and in patients with vasospastic angina, increased delivery of oxygen
