Angle Measurement Using Sine Bar
Angle Measurement Using Sine Bar
Department: Automobile Experiment: 01) Angle Measurement using Sine bar Date: __/__/__
Mechanical Measurement and Metrology Aim: To measure unknown angle of a given component using sine bar & slip gauges.
Apparatus: Bevel protractor, dial gauge, slip gauges, sine bar, component etc
Theory:
A bevel protractor is a graduated circular protractor having a pivoted arm; used for measuring or marking off angles. Sometimes vernier scales are attached to give more precise readings. It has wide application in architectural and mechanical drawing although with the availability of modern drawing software or CAD the tool is less commonly used in that sphere. Sine bar is a tool used to measure angles in metalworking. It consists of a hardened, precision ground body with two precision ground cylinders fixed at the ends. The distance between the centers of the cylinders is precisely controlled, and the top of the bar is parallel to a line through the centers of the two rollers. The dimension between the two rollers is chosen to be a whole number (for ease of later calculations) and forms the hypotenuse of a triangle when in use. The image shows a 100 mm sine bar.
Procedure:
1. Find the approximate taper angle of component using bevel protractor. 2. Build the approximate height of slip gauge by wringing up of slip gauges. 3. Place the sine bar with one roller resting on the surface plate and the other end on the pile up of slip gauges. 4. Place work on the top surface of sine bar and hold it securely. 5. Set dial gauge reading to zero and then move it along the top surface of the component. 6. Note down the reading of dial gauge.
Length (L) mm
Measured angle ()
height = L * sin
Calculations:
Height (h) =100 * sin ( ) =______ mm
/100)
Result:
1. Angle measured by bevel protractor: _____ 2. Angle measured by sine bar: _____
Conclusion:
Thus it can be conclude that angle measured by Sine bar is more accurate than the Bevel Protractor.
