What is Engine
•Engine is a machine.
•It converts one form of energy into another form of energy.

Types of Engine
1. Internal Combustion Engine
a) Petrol Engine

b) Diesel Engine

2. External Combustion Engine

a) Steam Engine

What is Petrol Engine

•Petrol Engine is a device.
•It converts heat energy into mechanical energy.

Working of Petrol Engine

On the basis of working Petrol Engines are of two types.
•Four Stroke Engine

2. Two Stroke Engine

Note: - Here we are defining about four stroke petrol engine.

1. Intake stroke
The intake stroke in relation to an internal combustion engine is the
downward stroke of the piston creating a vacuum that draws a
fuel/air mixture into the combustion chamber.

2.Compression stroke
In this stage, the fuel is compressed to the top of the cylinder by
the piston until it is ignited by a spark plug reaches the point at
which the fuel spontaneously combusts, forcing the piston back
down.

3.Power stroke
A power stroke is, in general, the stroke which generates force.
This force pushes the piston downwards.

4.Exhaust stroke
In this stage host gases from the fuel ignited during the
compression step are removed from the cylinder through a
valve at the top of the cylinder. The gases are forced up to the
top of the cylinder as the piston rises and are drawn through
the opening which then closes to allow fresh fuel into the
cylinder so the process can repeat itself.

These four strokes are repeated again and again.
