Tutorial 3 - Stream Tearing and Computational Sorting

This document discusses stream tearing and computational sorting concepts for pharmaceutical plant design. It provides three problems: 1) Find alternative minimum spanning trees and optimal tear streams and computation sequence for a process. 2) Find tear streams for a process when only performing mass balances or simultaneous mass and energy balances. 3) Find suitable tear streams and computation order for sequential modular simulation of a process producing acetic anhydride.

Tutorial 3: Stream Tearing and Computational Sorting Concepts Due on 02/09/2011

1. Find all alternative minimum spanning trees for the process shown below:

For one of the alternative MSTs, find the minimum number of tear streams and which streams should be selected for tearing, and identify the computation sequence that is optimal based on topological sorting.

2. Find the tear stream(s) for the following process flowsheet when:

(i) only mass balances will be performed; (ii) simultaneous mass and energy balances are to be performed.

3. Consider the following process block diagram for production of acetic anhydride. Find a
suitable et of tear streams and appropriate computation order for sequential modular simulation.
