Before Starting CAT Preparation... 9 months, 1 w eek ago

Hi I am a 2nd year B.Com student and I am average in acads. I have 78% in 10th, 83% in 12th, and 69% in 1st year. Since getting a good job after B.Com is not very much possible, A lot of people around me have been going to coaching intis for CAT prep. I did not join instis because i didnt think i could manage with my studies and CAT prep. now I see that people are already done with CAT syllabus and are beginning giving tests. my query is that is it okay to start preparing now or is it too late?? will i be able to complete syllabus and practice enough?

The quote 'You are never too late for anything' works here too. There is an year to go till CAT 2011 and that is hell lot of time. It is evident that you are not much aware of the exam. So here are some points that can help you: There is no hard-and-fast syllabus for CAT. It is an aptitude test with topics from you 10th class math, puzzles and general English. It is over-hyped, but getting a place in the Top-10 B-schools in India needs a lot of labor and practice. An institute is not a mandate for preparing. The institutes help in brushing up your skills and provide you with study material. The quality of faculty and study material is the determining factor for joining a particular institute. If you think you can manage with self-study, well and good. Mock Test Series are a must before you give CAT. Various Mock CAT series start around 6 months before CAT. Atleast one test series should be joined. A person can give CAT with a prep time ranging from 2 years to 15 days. That depends on the person's prior knowledge and aptitude. There is no compulsion about the time you have to devote to CAT prep. 1 year is a lot of time. Start now ! You have to manage your time between your college academics and CAT prep. MBA is all about time management. Start learning it now and your would be benefited in the near future. You just need to give 2-3 serious hours of study each day and you should be through. Since you are starting, make it a point to be optimistic. Clear your mind of all apprehensions and work hard !

@DAEMON: 1st of all welcome to Chalobolo. see, 1 year is ample time to prepare. actually it is only the mock tests that need to be given and analyzed. thats all. but if you havent been in touch with maths, you will have to spend a couple of months revising the topics.

Hi Daemon, The test series by chalobolo, CB-CAT, wud start arnd march-april but u shud not rush urself into mocks...u hav a lot of time nd systematic prep wud be of immense help. keep in mind dis few points:

1. U shud complete all the study mat given by ur insti(TIME, as u said). If u have mats from more than one insti, learn the concepts from ny1 of them. 2. Whenever u learn a new concept, or read a new chapter, practice all the questions from that topic/chap. If u hav buks 4m multiple sources, its a good thing to solve qstns from all of them. Remember 1 thing, u may already know the concept from ur skul, but thee qstns asked in CAT(or ny othr MBA entrance, for dat matr) afre totaly diffrnt 4m dose askd in boards. So solving qustions is a must to get thorough. 3. Give urself arnd 3 months to finish all the material u hav. No need to hurry for mocks, plan well and finish d mat by end-march. Its d most important thing becoz dat wil build nd polish ur concepts. 4. After u r thru wid the entire mat, u can start sectional tests from april. Giv as many tests as u can. tis wud generally go on till july, when most instis start their mocks. 5. In the meantime, even before ur insti has started, u can giv the CB-CAT aftr ur prep is done, so u wud also know ur progress.

5. In the meantime, even before ur insti has started, u can giv the CB-CAT aftr ur prep is done, so u wud also know ur progress. dese are the basic points u shud follow nd u wud c urself much better placed than others when the season peaks.. Oder dan dis, there are a few tips dat i found very helpful during my prep:

1. Don't binge-study. CAT is not a board exam, so cramming doesn't help. Make a point 2 sit wid ur buks everyday. I know its very tough to do dat, but try to mak dat at least 5-6 days a week. Studying fr 8 hrs in a day nd not studying for the next 5 days is useless. So sit wid ur buks everyday, even if its for 30 mins. Read only a page if u don't feel like reading ny more on a particular day, but do read everyday. Even on party days. 2. Make an excel sheet, where u shud maintain a record of all the tests u give, d scores u get, ur learning from the test nd d stategic mistakes u made. Hav a look at it ocasionaly, it wud help u streamline ur strategy for the exam. 3. Dont get bogged down by ur scores. If u get 90 %ile in a test, dat doesn't mean u have to get 95 or 93 in the next 1. Giv ur best widout worrying. Scores may fluctuate, every1 has a bad day occasionaly. So no need to be upset if u hav low scores in a test, u can always mak up 4 it in d next 1... 4. Keep the steam goin. Often ppl start wid a lot of enthu, but tend to lose d steam in 2-3 mnths. Mak sure u keep d fire burning. 5. Remember, CAT is NOT iit-jee in the sense dat to crack CAT, u dont need to study 10-12 or even 6 hrs a day, if u r focused nd regular, even 2 hrs a day is more dan enuf. 6. Wen u giv full mocks, try diffrnt strategies b4 u settle on 1, so dat u knw wat works best 4 u. 7. Nd lastly, keep urself up to date. Read newspapers, busines mags everyday. Devote at least an hour to the newspaper. It might sound boring if u don't hav the habit, but trust me, once u form the habit, u wud luv ur daily dose nd even look 4wrd to it.

Nd most imp, remember CAT is not the end of the world. So don't kill ur social life for that, spend tym wid ur frnz and family, nd mak new ones. CAT is no reason for u to bcome a loner. ATB nd lookin to hear more from u.... Dhiresh.
