Type of roots of quadratic equation ax + bx + c = 0 determined by b-4ac. b-4ac > 0: real and distinct/different roots.
b-4ac = 0 : real and equal / repeated roots b-4ac < 0 : No real roots / imaginary roots
CHAPTER 3 : QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS 1. General form : f(x) = ax+ bx + c 2. If a> 0, graph of quadratic function curves upwards. Graph has minimum point 3. If a < 0, graph curves downwords. Max point 4. Position of graph with respect to the x-axis depends on type of roots of quadratic equation Intersect the x-axis at two distinct points. b-4ac > 0
Graph touches the x-axis at one point only. b-4ac = 0
Graph does not intersect the x-axis. b-4ac < 0
Maximum and Minimum Values of Quadratic Functions 1. can be found by completing square. expressing f(x) = ax + bx + c in form f(x) = a(x+p) +q where the min or max value = q. 2. If a > 0, f(x) = a(x+p) +q has a minimum point at (-p,q) 3. If a < 0, F(x) = a(x+p) +q has a maximum point at (-p,q) 4. The axis of symmetry is x=-p 5. Min and max points known as stationary / turning points.
Sketching Graphs of Quadratic Functions 1. Determine the shape of function graph 2. Find max or min point by completing square 3. Determine position of graph by b-4ac. If b-4ac >0, determine values of x (by factorization, quadratic formula/ completing the square) 4. Determine y-intercept (where curve cuts y-axis) by substituting x = 0 5. Sketch graph completely and label the coordinates of min and max point, x and y-intercepts.
Quadratic Inequalities 1. Can be solved by using graph sketching method or number line method.
