The Globe theatre was built in 1599 on the banks of the River Thames in London, England. It was the home of the Lord Chamberlain's Men acting company, of which William Shakespeare was a member. The Globe had an open-air stage and circular structure with three levels of audience seating on three sides. It could hold up to 3,000 spectators but burned down during a performance in 1613 and was later demolished, though a new Globe Theatre was rebuilt in 1997.
