Optical Instruments

This document defines and provides examples of different optical instruments. It explains that an optical instrument acts on light in a desired way, such as magnification or diffraction. The document then describes several common optical instruments: telescopes, binoculars, periscopes, microscopes, and sextants. For each instrument, it provides a brief definition and explanation of its basic components and purpose. The overall document serves to introduce and provide basic information about different types of optical instruments.

What is an OPTICAL
INSTRUMENT?

•Optical instrument is a device that acts on

light in some desired way ,such as to
produce magnification or diffraction.
SOME OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS
ARE :-
• TELESCOPE .
• BINOCULAR.
• PERISCOPE.
• MICROSCOPE.
• Sextant.
TELESCOPE
• Telescope is a device that permits distant
and faint objects to be viewed as if they
were much brighter and closer to the
observer .
• Telescopes are typically used to observe
the skies.
BINOCULAR
• Binocular optical instrument that magnifies distant
objects.
• It consists of two telescopes that can be focused
simultaneously by means of a thumbscrew and that
are usually capable of independent adjustment for
each eye.
• Each telescope is equipped with a small concave
lens and a large convex lens.
PERISCOPE
• This optical instrument is used for conducting
observations from a concealed or protected
position, a simple periscope consists essentially
of reflecting mirrors at opposite ends of a tube
with the reflecting surfaces parallel to each other
and at a 45° angle to the axis of the tube.
MICROSCOPE

•Microscope is an optical instrument used to

a magnified image of minute objects or
minute details of objects.
Sextant
• Sextant is an optical instrument used for
the measurement of angular distance
between two objects.
• The chief use of sextant is in navigation.
