    Sulphuric acid is used in many industrial processes like oil refining and fertilizer production. It is manufactured using the contact process, which involves three main stages - combustion of sulphur to produce sulphur dioxide, conversion of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide, and absorption of sulphur trioxide to form sulphuric acid. Sulphur dioxide gas is also released into the atmosphere during the contact process and from burning fuels containing sulphur, which can oxidize to form sulphur trioxide and is an environmental issue.

    Sulphur dioxide emissions an environmental issue 1)Sulphur dioxide gas is released into the atmosphere from the burning of sulphur (Contact process), the burning of high-sulphur coals or fuel oils. 2) sulphur dioxide cn be rapidly oxidised to sulphur trioxide when the reaction is catalysed on the surface of airbone particles such as dust particles or water droplets.
