Measuring using INCHES FEET YARDS MILES

Now look at that ruler again does anyone know what unit of measurement that one of these rulers is equal to?

STANDARD SYSTEM - FEET

What would we measure in feet?

A pencil

City roads or distances between places

FEET & INCHES

Count the number of inches on your foot ruler.

1 foot = ___ inches

FEET & INCHES

Count the number of inches on your foot ruler.

1 foot = 12 inches

Did you know?! -- The lines halfway between each number on a ruler are half-inches! So the bigger line in between 10 & 11 is ____ in.

STANDARD SYSTEM - YARDS

Want to find a quicker way to measure something than lining up a few 12-in. rulers?

Thats when you can measure in yards! Where have you heard of something measured in yards?

STANDARD SYSTEM - YARDS

Of course in football! Every small marking on the field is 1 yard OR 3 feet, because

1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches

Ways to remember our units

1 inch = About from the top of Your thumb to the knuckle 1 foot = About an egg carton
1 in.

1 yd.

1 yard = About the width of A normal doorway

ALL EQUAL!

What about long distance?!

What if you want to measure from your house to a friends house?

What unit would you use?

STANDARD SYSTEM - MILES

A mile is a long way if you think about it - one mile = 1,760 yd / 5,280 ft! That would take:

1,760 yardsticks 5,280 rulers

and dont even think about measuring it with your thumbs! 1 mile = 63,360 inches!!!

(To the tune of Shell Be Coming Round the Mountain)

Well be measurin with feet, inches, and yards (Yee haw!) Well be measurin with feet, inches, and yards (Yee haw!) If 12 inches is a foot And 3 feet is a yard Then weve got 36 inches in a yard! (One more time!)
