HW 5

This document provides the details of a statics homework assignment with 9 problems involving forces, levers, cables, and structural members. Students are tasked with determining forces, tensions, and reactions using given information like masses, angles, distances, and applied loads. The problems cover common statics concepts like equilibrium of rigid bodies, trusses, frames, and beams.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT CE2311 Statics Homework 5 (Due Wednesday, July 27) 1.

A hand truck is used to move two barrels, each weighing 80 lb. Neglecting the weight of the hand truck, determine (a) the vertical force P which should be applied to the handle to maintain equilibrium when =35, (b) the corresponding reaction at each of the two wheels. Summer 2011

2. When cars C and D stop on a two-lane bridge, the forces exerted by their tires on the bridge are as shown. Determine the total reactions at A and B when (a) a = 2.9 m, (b) a = 8.1 m.

3. Determine the reactions at A and B when (a) = 0, (b) = 90, (c) = 30

4. The required force to be exerted at A by lever ABC is 3 lb. Knowing that = 30 and that the spring has been stretched 1.2 in., determine (a) the constant k of the spring (b) the reaction at B.

5. A lever AB is hinged at C and is attached to a control cable at A. If the lever is subjected to a 60 lb vertical force at B, determine (a) the tension in the cable, (b) the reaction at C.

6. Knowing that the tension in wire BD is 300 lb, determine the reaction at fixed support C for the frame shown.

7. A 2.4 m long boom is held by a ball-and-socket joint at C and by two cables AD and BE. Determin the tension in each cable and the reaction at C.

8. The rectangular plate shown has a mass of 15 kg and is held in the position shown by hinges A and B and cable EF. Assuming that the hinge at B does not exert any axial thrust, determine (a) the tension in the cable, (b) the reactions at A and B.

9. Member ABCD of length 31.5 in. is supported by ball-and-socket joints at A and B and is trisected by arms CE and DF which are welded to the member. For the loading shown, determine the tension in cable FG.
