edu Lab Report Guidelines (For non-formal lab reports) *These are just general guidelines* Pre-lab Name/ SID GSI/ Lab section Date Experiment Number Lab Partner Name Purpose/Introduction (1-3 sentences) o What are we doing in this experiment? o What methods are we using? (if applicable) o What is the main goal? (Why is this experiment important?) Intended Procedure (For exp. 1 you can just write the actual procedure you did during class) o Plan out the procedure. You can use a flow chart, bulleted list, etc. o Which steps will take the longest? o Which steps, if any, can be done out of order? Charts/ Tables/ Preliminary Calculations o Copy any charts/ tables you will need to record data into the lab notebook. o Do any calculations that you might need in your lab notebook.

* To receive credit for your pre-lab, I must initial it during the lab period. During the Experiment Write out your actual procedure in your notebook or note any deviations from your planned procdure. Record all observations, data, calculations. All of this must be written in the lab notebook during labDont write on a separate piece of paper then copy this into your notebook.

* To receive credit, I must initial this before you leave the lab period. After the Experiment Data/ Results (For exp. 1, there is a worksheet posted on bspace) o Write out all data, results and observations neatly. o Include calculations. Show work and box/circle answers. If there are repetitive calculations, just write out one example of the calculation. You can type/ use a computer if it is easier for you. o Include graphs, tables and charts when appropriate. Plot graphs on using excel or a similar program. Discussion (One lab notebook page maximum a shorter discussion is great if possible) o Be concise and clear. o Briefly discuss and interpret your data. o What is your data? What did you find? o What does this data mean? o What were the sources of error? (Hint: For Exp. 1 refer to the document I sent about Exp. 1) Conclusion (1-2 sentences)

*When you turn in your lab report, I must initial it.
