01 Estimation

The document discusses several mathematical concepts including approximation, rounding, estimating, and working with compatible numbers. It provides examples of rounding numbers based on whether the digit to the right is above or below 5, estimating sums by finding a number around which numbers cluster, using front-end estimation to estimate sums and differences of large numbers, and identifying compatible numbers that are easy to multiply or divide mentally.

Definition: The process of finding a number close to an exact amount.

Approximation, About, Roughly Estimacin

Reasonableness: Does it make sense? If not, check your work because you may
have done something wrong. Reasonable Razonable

Look at the digit to the right of the place being rounded 5 & above, give it a shove 4 & below, let it go 812 800 -193-200 619 600 Is 619 a reasonable answer? Yes; 619 is close to 600.

Used when numbers are close to the same number. Find a number around which each number in the set clusters. Then use that number for all the numbers. 5.55 + 6.01 + 5.7 + 6.412 = 23.672 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24 Four 6s = 46 = 24

Compatible numbers: Two numbers that are easy to multiply or divide mentally. They are usually members of fact families.

24.8 25 x4.1 x4 101.68 100

8.5 33.1

4 8 32

Front end estimation produces a better estimation of sums or differences than rounding before adding or subtracting. Works well with really large numbers.

*Keep the two highest place values of each number. *Insert zeros for the other place values.
