SEM Introduction 1

This document provides an introduction to Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). It discusses that SEM is a multivariate statistical analysis technique that combines regression and factor analysis. It allows researchers to estimate causal relationships between multiple variables while accounting for measurement error. The document introduces some key SEM terms and explains that software like AMOS can be used to help estimate SEM models. It presents a simple example SEM path diagram and notes that while SEM is complex, understanding theoretical foundations is important before using software to analyze SEM models.

Objectives
The introduction of SEM At the end of this 30 minutes presentation, participants are expected to briefly understand why and how SEM is used Some key terms in SEM SEM vs AMOS?

Nagarajah FTMSK

What is SEM (1)?

SEM is a multivariate technique combining aspects of multiple regression (examining dependence relationships) and factor analysis (representing unmeasured concepts factors with multiple variables) to estimate a series of interrelated dependence relationships simultaneously.

What is SEM (2) ?

It encompasses an entire family of models such as covariance structure analysis, latent variable analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, path analysis and linear structural relation analysis

How does SEM work? (1)

SEM is a complicated and complex modeling technique Therefore it is very important to understand some of the semantics (key terms) before using it The understanding of the theoretical aspects of SEM is also essential Then only will the users be able to fully utilize the software for SEM (eg LISREL, AMOS, SEPATH, PLS etc).

How does SEM work? (2)

SEM is a technique or approach that enables researchers to:

Estimate the causal-effect relationships among multiple and interrelated variables Represent latent concepts in the model and take into consideration the measurement error

SEM vs AMOS?
AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structures) complements the estimation process of SEM There are two important features of SEM that we normally like to use, ie AMOS Graphics and AMOS Basic The former will be the focus of our workshop, ie AMOS Graphics
