The Apayaos are river people, getting their name from the warm waters of the Apayao River. They can be found in the northwestern end of the island of Luzon from Abulog up to the Apayao River. This mountainous area is rich in life with its dark tropical rainforests. They believe that all natural phenomena are governed by the anitos. They are kind, hospitable and generous. They are highly aesthetic in temperament, are self-reliant, and honest. Two of the most important rituals that bind them are say-am and pildap. Say-am is a feast held by a wealthy family, usually accompanied by wine, eating and dancing. Pidlap, on the other hand, is a feast practiced by the poorer natives, usually done when a family moves to another place. It is also practiced when someone seeks healing and the family offers food wrapped in banana leaves to the community. Durarakit is a priest or priestess who performs during the ceremony given to ask favors from the anito. When a woman feels she is about to deliver a baby, the husband or mother-inlaw twist a piece of cloth, light one end and places it at the door. This is called pangan. Shredded coconut called igad are also placed near the door. These guard the woman from the anito which intends to harm the woman.
