Problem No. 1 Solution

The document describes a problem involving the siphoning of water through a plastic tube. It is given that the tube has an inside diameter of 50 mm and water is being siphoned from a tank located 4 m above the tube to a point located h meters below. It is found that for the siphon to operate continuously without the tube collapsing, h must be at least 3.449 m. The flow is calculated to be turbulent with a velocity of 3.286 m/s at point h.

Problem 1

A plastic tube of 50-mm inside diameter is used to siphon water from a large tank as shown in the figure below. If the pressure on the outside of the tube is more than 25 kPa greater than the pressure within the tube, the tube will collapse and the siphon will stop. If viscous effects are negligible, please determine the minimum value of h allowed without the siphon stopping. What is the type of flow.

Define Points
(2) 50 mm

2m (1)

(3) 4m

Given:

Di = 50 mm Z1 = 4 m Z2 = 6 m Z3 = h U2 = U3 P3-P2 = 25 kPa

Solution: h, and U3
Eqn. 1

Eqn. 2

Eqn. 3

P1 + 1/2U12 + gZ1 = P2 + 1/2 U22 + gZ2 = P3 + 1/2 U32 + gZ3

Assume Steady, inviscid and incompressible fluid From Eqn 2 and 3: But U1 = U2

P2 + U22 + gZ2 = P3 + U32 + gZ3

And P3 P2 = 25000Pa, the eqn becomes:

gZ2 = 25000Pa + gZ3 Z3 = - (25000) / (1000)(9.8) + 6 Z3 = h = 3.449 m

Using Equation 1 and 3:

U

=0

P1 + 1/2U12 + gZ1 = P3 + 1/2 U32 + gZ3 The equation becomes: g(Z1-Z3) = 1/2 (U32) U3 = 2g(Z1-Z3) U3 = 2(9.8)(4-3.449) U3 = 3.286 m/s

Solving for , NRe

From handbook: = e(C1+C2/T+C3lnT+C4T^C5)

C1 = -52.843 C2 = 3703.6 C3 = 5.866 C4 =-5.879E-29 5 = 10 Substituting the value gives: = 9.1555 x 10-4 Pa-s

NRe = DV /

Substituting the values:

NRe = (0.05)(3.286)(1000)/ 9.155 x 10-4 NRe = 179454.9724 NRe > 2000 therefore , Turbulent
