Solving Equations Notes
An equation is made up of two equal expressions. When solving equations the goal is to ____________ the variable using _____________ operations. Always start by locating the variable and keep removing values until it is completely isolated on one side of the equation (all by itself).
1-step equations m + 9 = 21 m/4 56= y 24 11p = 66 92 =
Dealing with Fractions in Equations
Many freshmen struggle with basic operations of fractions. (add/subtract, multiply, divide) Here are some example one-step equations similar to those you will be expected to be able to solve.
3 5 n = 12
1z=2 5 4
Rules for Fractions
Adding and Subracting- You must get a common denominator. Then add or subtract the numerator depending on type of question. Keep the denominator the same. Reduce the fraction if necessary.
Multiplying- Multiply straight across (numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator) Reduce the fraction if necessary.
Division- Flip the fraction you are dividing by and then multiply straight across. Reduce the fraction if necessary.
