Assignment 2

The document contains three soil mechanics problems: 1) Classifying two soils based on grain size distribution and Atterberg limits data. 2) Plotting the dry density vs moisture content curve and 0% air void curve from standard compaction test results. 3) Calculating effective vertical and horizontal stresses at two depths based on the soil profile, properties, groundwater table and coefficients of earth pressure.

Classify the following soils using the given grain size distribution (ASTM system) and Atterberg limits data: a. 42% passed 4.75 mm sieve; 4% passed 0.075 mm sieve; Cu=18, Cc=2.1 b. 14% retained on 4.75 mm sieve; 60% passed 0.075 mm sieve; Liquid limit (LL)=65, Plastic limit (PL) =35.

The specific gravity of the solids is 2.68, and the volume of the compaction mould is 1000 cm3. a) Plot the dry density vs. moisture content curve and obtain the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content. b) Plot the 0% air void curve.

3. A soil profile shown in Fig. 1 consists of a layer of sand (the thickness is 10 m) and a layer of saturated clay (the thickness is 5 m). The density of sand is 1.7 g/cm3 when it is dry (dry), and 1.9 g/cm3 when saturated (sat) with water. The unit weight of clay is = 20 kN/m3. The ground water table is located at the depth of 4 m below the ground surface. The coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0) for sand is 0.8 and for clay is 1.2. dry = 1.7 g/cm3 SAND sat=1.9 g/cm3, K0=0.8

CLAY 5m = 20 kN/m3 K0=1.2

Figure 1. Calculate: a) The effective vertical and horizontal stresses at depth of 8 m; b) The effective vertical and horizontal stresses at depth 14 m below the ground level.
