Assignment 1

This document provides instructions for an assignment to design a mobile network for a city with a population of 12 million people, with 30% subscribing to mobile services. The network must use FDMA and TDMA to provide access in the 825-850 MHz uplink and 870-895 MHz downlink bands. The design must show: 1) A cell configuration for the city with frequency and time slot allocation subject to interference and adjacent frequency constraints. 2) Calculations for bandwidth, bit rate, time slots, cell cluster size, and user channels needed per cell. 3) An indication of what percentage of expected users can be serviced with reasonable quality of service if full service is not possible.

Assignment 1 EE522 Telecommunication and Wireless Systems, 2011 Dept.

. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya Submit on or before 28th April 2011

Consider a city of radius 20km. The population in the inner area of 10km radius is 10 million while it is 2 million elsewhere. Approximately 30% of the population, which is uniformly distributed over the two areas, intends to subscribe for mobile services. The mobile network plans to use 825-850 MHz band for uplink channels and 870-895 MHz band for downlink channels, and both FDMA and TDMA to provide user access.

Draw the cell configuration for the city and show the allocation of frequencies and time slots in each cell subject to the following conditions. a) When frequencies are reused the co-channel interference must be below acceptable levels (SIR > 18 dB) b) Frequency adjacent in the spectrum should not be allocated to neighboring cells, if possible c) Frequencies must be separated with an adequate guard band such that the filters are realizable, i.e. factional bandwidth > 0.01% d) Hexagonal shaped cells of different sizes can be used Clearly state any assumptions that you made. You may answer/calculate the following first What is the bandwidth suitable for each frequency sub band? What is the bit rate per sub-channel if the modulation efficiency is 1.35 bps/Hz? How many time slots can be accommodated to a frequency while providing a reasonable speech quality (4800 bps rate)? What is the appropriate cell cluster size? How many different user channels are really needed per each cell? If it is not possible to service the expected number of users, indicate what percentage can be serviced with a reasonable quality of service. How many user slots (n user channels) are usually made available for a given number of users (N users) in a cell area, considering that not all of them try to access a channel simultaneously?
