shear modulus tensile strength compressive strength and shear strength ANSWER: For E-glass, the most common fiber: E=72 GPa tensile strength F=3.45 GPA (see note at the bottom of Table 2 in http://www.mae.wvu.edu/barbero/icmd/index.html Poisson's ratio n=0.22 Since glass is isotropic, shear modulus G calculated in terms of E and n, as G=E/2/(1+n). Compressive strength is same as tensile but you can't realize it because fiber will buckle, see section 4.4.2 in same book ref. above. Shear strength of glass also irrelevant because the matrix (polyester, epoxy) controls that, see sections 4.4.5 and 4.4.6. There is also S-, C-, and D- glass (see Table 2).

Answer Actually the stiffness is low at 72 GPa compared to Aluminum at about 75 and steel at about 200. This is a disadvantage compared to Carbon fiber (and steel). Of course the density i low (2.5 g/cc) s which helps, but Carbon fiber is lighter at 1.2 g/cc. The strength of fiber-glass is high because the defects are minimized by making such a thin fiber, the defects like cracks and voids literally don't fit into the fiber. In comparison, bulk glass (say a window glass) is low strength because defects are there that make it brittle. Fiberglass is durable because, well, it is glass, that is, an amorphous silicate, resistant to anything that is not alkaline; that means fiberglass will corrode if in contact with alkaline ions such as those found in concrete. For this reason, fiberglass needs to be perfectly enclosed by a polymer such as Epoxy to protect it from moisture.
