Peka Sains Form 5

The document describes an experiment to study the effects of acid and alkali on latex coagulation. Latex was added to three beakers - one with acetic acid, one with ammonia solution, and one alone. The acetic acid caused the latex to coagulate by neutralizing the negative charges on rubber proteins and causing particles to collide. The ammonia prevented coagulation by neutralizing any acid produced by bacteria in the latex. The hypothesis that acid would cause coagulation while alkali would prevent it was supported.

TOPIC : ACTION OF ACID AND ALKALI ON LATEX Aim : To study the effects of acid and alkali on latex.

Problem Statement : How does latex coagulate and how can it be prevented from coagulating. Hypothesis : Acid will cause latex to coagulate while alkali will prevent it from coagulating. Variables : (i) Constant :Volume of latex (ii) Manipulated :Type of solution / presence of acid or alkali. (iii) Responding :Coagulation of latex Apparatus : Beakers, glass rod, dropper. Materials : Latex, ethanoic acid, ammonia solution. Procedure : 1) 20 cm latex is added to three beakers labeled A, B and C.

2) To beaker A, ethanoic acid is added drop by drop. The mixture is stirred and the observing on the condition of lateis recorded after 10 minutes. 3) To beaker B, procedure (2) is repeated with ammonia solution. 4) Latex in beaker C is stirred and the observing on the condition of the latex is recorded after one day. Observation : Beaker (A) Latex + ethanoic acid (B) Latex + ammonia solution (C) Latex Discussion : 1) Ethanoic acid contains hydrogen ions with positive charges which neutralize the negative charges one the rubber protein membrane. The rubber particles collide causing the protein membranes to break and the rubber molecules to combine with one another. Coagulate of latex

2) Ammonia solution contains hydroxide ions with negative charges, which neutralize any acid produced by bacteria in the latex. 3) Hypothesis is accepted.
