First Presentation 1

The document describes the major components of an air compression system for vehicle tires, including a nozzle duct to increase airflow velocity, two non-return valves to control air pressure, tubing to house the valves, a ram to push air into an outlet, a rotary joint to transfer air to rotating tires, and a pressure switch to monitor air pressure.

Major Components

Nozzle duct. Two non-return valves. Tubing.

Ram.

Rotary joint. Pressure switch.

Nozzle duct The nozzle duct would aid in air accumulation by reducing the area of flow and thereby increasing its velocity. The duct is to be designed based on the average relative velocity of the air with respect to the vehicle. Non return valves The working of the non return valves has been explained in detail in the video. The distance between the two non return valves would determine the amount of pressure that is to be maintained in at the outlet.

Tubing

The tubing houses the two non return valves. The tubing is to be flexible and preferably rubber should solve the purpose.

Further investigation into the type of rubber is to be done.

Ram The ram is to be placed in order to suck the air into the tubing and then to push it into the outlet. Initially, we have thought about the idea of using the vertical motion of the chassis of the vehicle to operate the ram. The feasibility of the design is to be experimentally verified. Rotary joint

Fig 1 Rotary joint

The rotary joint would enable the transfer of the compressed air from the second non return valve into the rotating tyre. These valves have been put to use in several systems like in the pneumatic lines governing the rotary motion of the robot arms. Specification

S Series/In-Line Swivel Joint. Sizes - " through 2" pipe size. Operating pressures - vacuum & to 3,000 PSI

Operating temperatures - 40 to 200 F

Pressure switch Pressure switches are commercially available. A pressure switch is a form of switch that makes electrical contact when a certain set pressure has been reached on its input or output. This is used to provide on/off switching from a pneumatic or hydraulic source. The switch may be designed to make contact either on pressure rise or on pressure fall.
