ELECTRIC DRIVES FOR HEVS


With ever increasing concerns on our environment, there is a fast growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) from auto makers, governments and customers. As electric drives are the core of both EVs and HEVs. It is a pressing need for researches to develop advanced electric-drive systems. To increase the starting torque and decrease starting current without motor efficiency and power factor, electric-drives are used in PHEVs.

2.1 ADDITIONAL CHARACTERISTICS


1. High torque density and power density 2. Very wide speed range covering low speed crawling & high speed cruising 3. High efficiency over wide torque and speed ranges 4. Wide constant power operating capability 5. High torque capability for electric launch and hill climbing 6. High intermittent overload capability for overtaking 7. High reliability and robustness for vehicular environment

3. INDUCTION DRIVES
Induction drives are widely accepted brushless drive for EVs, because of their low cost higher reliability and freedom from maintenance. Conventional control of induction drives such as variable voltage frequency cannot provide the desired performance. The major reason is due to the nonlinearities of their dynamic model. Efficiency-optimizing -control(EOC) approaches have been developed for the EV induction drives which can reduce the consumed energy by about 10% and increase the regenerative energy by about 4% leading to the extension of the driving range of the EVs. Electrically pole changing schemes have been developed for the EV Induction drives, which can significantly extend the constant-power operating region to over four times the base speed.

4. THE NEED FOR A NEW MOTOR DRIVE FOR PHEV


The driving motor should have an excellent acceleration torque to satisfy EV starting, accelerating and climbing. At the same time, the efficiency of motor should be high. To increase the starting torque and decreasing starting current without affecting motor efficiency power factor, anew motor drive is used in PHEV. The starting performance of normal induction machine with solid rotor cannot satisfy this. A new kind of induction motor with compound cage rotor (IMCCR) is introduced whose status structure is the same that of normal induction motor where as rotor structure are different.
