Plastic Modulus Calculation

The document discusses plastic bending of straight beams. It defines the fully plastic moment (MFP) as the bending moment at which the entire beam cross section yields. Reaching MFP forms a plastic hinge and exceeding a certain number of plastic hinges causes collapse. It provides equations to calculate the elastic and plastic moment capacities of beams based on the stress-strain diagram. The ratio of MFP to elastic moment is called the shape factor. Examples calculate the partially plastic moments for beams with non-uniform cross sections.

is the bending moment at which the entire section will become plastic, or the
bending moment associated with yielding that has penetrated the entire depth is called
the fully plastic moment. Note that the M
F P
is the ultimate moment capacity of a
section. If M M
F P

F P

say that a plastic hinge has been formed. If the number of plastic hinges exceeds
certain value, then the structure or a member will collapse.
