OBJECTIVES
Student should be able to: 1) Use the suitable range of voltmeter 2) To identify and calculate the exciting errors.
INTRODUCTION
A voltmeter is an instrument used for measuring the electrical potential difference between two points in an electrical circuit.Analog voltmeters move a pointer across a scale in proportion to the voltage of the circuit;digital voltmetes give a numerical display of voltage by use of an analog to digital converter.Voltmeters are made in a wide range of styles.Intruments permanently mounted in a panel are used to monitor generators or other fixed apparatus.Portable instruments, usually equipped to also measure current and resistance in the form of a multimeter, are standard test instruments used in electrical and electronic work.Any measurement that can be converted to a voltage can be displayed on a meter that is suitably calibrated;for example, pressure, temperature, flow or level in a chemical process plant.
PROCEDURE
1) Connect the circuit.Adjusts the power supply to 0V for safety first. 2) Connect the voltmeter by using range 3. 3) Adjust the Vs value to 2.8V. 4) Record the V1 value measure by the voltmeter on table 1. Range Vs (V) 2.8V Error % 3 3.0V 7.14 Vs 10 2.85V 1.79 30 23.0V 7.14
5) Complete table 1 by repeating step 2 to 4 by changing the range value. 6) Repeat step 3 by adjusting the Vs value to 8.7V. 7) Measure V1 by using range value as shown on table 2, 8) Record the V1 value measure by voltmeter on table 2. Range Vs (V) 8.7V Error % 10 9V 3.45 V1 30 9V 3.45
9) Calculate the existing error of voltage for both tables by using=Vs-V1 x100% Vs 10) Record the error on both tables.
